Impossible Engineering

The Discovery Channel featured impossible train engineering mostly done in the late 1800 and early 1900.  Truly man has the dominion over the earth as  mandated in Genesis 1:28. Engineers did almost the  impossible in building trains to ease travel. The obstacles overcame were tall and unforgiving mountains and elevations, water (swamps rivers)  lakes, oceans/seas. And the achievements were truly remarkable.

Some of those mentioned were:

1.  Australian railway line that connected the minesites to Sydney. The steep mountain side were manually chipped away by crowbars (the bars were hammered one by one).  In order to overcome the steep mountain side, the train reversed to lessen the gradient

2.  Trains can only go up to maximum of 7% grade/incline.   To go beyond this, as they did in UK they employed rack and pinion railway system.  The train rollers were the pinion (toothed) and the rail were pinion.  However some trains due to their weight fell on their sides.  Solution, the rack were enclosed in cribs.

3.  In Poland, to connect a city, there was train that was pulled by system of cables run by water turbines to go through waterways and inclines.  It was an ingenious method and the rail system can pull loads up to 40 tons.

4. There was railway system that was built on swampland. However the rail bed continued to sink. The solution a drain for the swampland.

5. A train system in Switzerland employed a round about of 70 meters to change incline gradually across  valleys up to the mountain

6.  Most of train system in Italy and Switzerland employed tunneling manual (not the automatic boring system we see now..  In an Italian island the railway system connected the 12 villages and to build the rail, materials have to be delivered by helicopter.

7.  An ingenious and constant watch over erosion and landslide has to be done.   Monitors have to be established built, as well as strong slope protection:  gabion etc to prevent the landslide from eating, destroying the railways

8.  In Sierra Nevada, and elsewhere a deep snow machine was invented to prevent deep snow from turning into ice that stranded many passenters.

9.  Some of  the other spectacular rail were:

      1.  The one in Istanbul built underwater.  Made of concrete tubes buried underwater beneath 60 meters of water and interlocked by steel and rubber gasket.  A system of monitoring and flood control was installed to prevent flooding and catastrophe from earthquake.

    2. The two km train system between India and Sri Lanka.  It was built by  a British Engineer. At the middle was a drawbridge that enabled ships to pass.  The bridge used minimual counterweight (using the  principle of rocking chair) and can be operated by hand

   3. The bridge in UK that employed multi design to be robust and  has run for more than 150 years:  use suspension system, an arch,and vertical support. It was tall enough to enable Naval ships to pass through the channel.

Last Saturday, I was discussing with an Engineer, a mechanical engineer, who heads the sales group in Northern and central Luzon (they are engaged in sales of systems concerning refrigeration).  He said that it is no longer a question of doing things right but thinking outside the box.  Of being creative and disruptive.   Of going beyond the process.

They had a problem with the customer who disliked  what they were doing.  And this stemmed from lack of understanding what the customer wanted (QFD tool would have solved this; prevented)

A company can not grow using the methods and strategy of what they were doing successfully before;   Customer wants and needs change.  Business dynamics change.

Some examples

1.  A food company would like to grow using only the manufactured here only mindset.  But a leading food company grows by outsourcing, ie pooling together food producers, marketing their products with theirs using their brand;

    You have to innovate the competitors perception but instead make them your partners

2.  A condo maker, confronted with growing inventories of unsold units, rents out unsold units with option to buy, to those who cant afford the hefty d/p, monthly but who can pay market rates for lodging purposes;

Strides in innovation in local governance


Three local executives were featured  in an interview at ANC about the achievements in their innovation in local governance.  Those that I remembered were mayors of San Felipe Zambales, and Angono Rizal

Indeed much progress have been achieved in towns and cities where there are no dynasties and the local execs are educated, ambitious and intelligent.

The contest being conducted by DILG like ranking the towns in competitiveness, GOLD awards, Gawad  Galing  awards have done wonders in improving the local governance.  Among them was Taytay Rizal for promoting garments industry

However some body erred in the interview that their programs will continue thanks to the council resolutions. However preserving what one has done before is contrary to innovation

To really produce new products and encourage entrep students practice tinkering and experimenting with new ideas, the easiest route/medium is food.  That is why I had sort of iron chef competition in the class where they have their own menu and make their pitches (they have to do a sales talk to entice buyers/customers)

Food is also the greatest family expenditure consuming more than 50% of the GDP.  This runs into trillion.

It is no wonder that the food industry has its biggest share of winners (and losers.)  Innovation here is short lived, sometimes with the same life span of a vegetable in the refrigerator.  Food taste rapidly and some restaurants, change their menu and format every quarter.  Otherwise, you will not survive.
Customer needs change rapidly

Some notable foodstuff innovation that I saw:

1.   Brewed coffee in a tea bag.  An entrepreneur experienced that brewing coffee takes time .  So why not do it the teabag way.  All you have to do is boil water and put the tea bag in.

Japan has grown big and conservative.  The once darling of innovation and copy cats has become staid, slow and complacent.

Banks support only conservative, big businesses. Gone were its support for entrepreneurs in the likes of Akio Morita and Konosuke Matsushita

However NHK reports some interesting changes:

1. Moonlighting is now encouraged so that employees can submit innovative ideas.

2.  Special clothes for breastfeeding mom. There is a company and has been around for 20 years specializing only on such clothing

The Background:

Setting an appointment for a medical consultation is always a hassle and could be time consuming especially if one is trying to call the trunk line of the hospital. In this era of connectivity through the different media platforms, developing an appointment scheduler application will prove to be very convenient for both patients and doctors. Both can manage their time well thereby promoting efficiency in the delivery of service making both parties happy.

How the Innovation will work: 

A company will solicit the participation of the doctors who wish to be included in the data base of the app. Doctors should supply all the relevant data to their medical practice especially real time appointment schedule. Once an app is developed and offered free of service through the IOS and Android operating systems of the different gadgets, patients or relatives can access the online services of the different doctors enrolled in the application.

Gains from the Innovation:

Having an app in one's gadget will facilitate the setting of a medical appointment schedule to one's doctor through the fingertips so to speak. It may seem a small gesture but it gives convenience to both patients and doctors because time can be managed well for both of them. The app will feature the announcement of doctors' unavailability on certain dates due to conferences and other scheduled activities, thereby avoiding unnecessary travels by patients to the clinic saving time and money.  Additionally, the app will also be a marketing opportunity for doctors to create awareness of his medical practice. Efficiency in the delivery of service will be the most important benefit and it can in one way or another alleviate the suffering of the patients.

Implementation of the Innovation: 

Doctors will be encouraged to enroll in the database of a particular managing company that hosts the app with a minimal membership fee. Relevant information about the doctor especially the real time clinic appointment scheduler can be accessed through the app. The host server will link up the doctors' system to the app so that it will be real time. Initial information of the patient can already be filled up when setting the appointment online so that by the time the patient gets to the clinic, he/she is ready to be seen by the doctor minimizing waiting time. Overall, this system creates efficiency of service.    4

The Background

Technology has many applications in every aspect of our lives more so, in the practice of medicine. Advancement of diagnostic and treatment options has improved the management of diseases and prolonged the life of patients. But the drawback is that because of the rapid changes in technology, usually a machine will be overtaken by a newer generation within three years time. Funding the maintenance/repair and upgrade of these machines and equipments of course, comes with a price, in which every health facility or clinic owner faces with much trepidation. Having a special fund earmarked for this purpose will help the health facility in programming its resources.

How the Innovation will work 

Banks usually offer different products like special savings, time deposits, mutual funds, loans, etc that encourage clients to make deposits which the banks use to do business/investments in order to earn more. The abovementioned products have different interest rates, features and perks that encourage clients to avail. If they offer products for purposes of funding home renovation, buying a real property or school tuition; why not a special savings account that offers a special interest rate for a special accounts offered to individual doctors and/or health facilities for purposes of maintaining and/or having an upgrade of medical equipments and machines? 

Gains from the Innovation

Having special kind of "savings account" that offers a higher interest rate than the usual, where the clinic owner or health facility can deposit monthly until it reaches a prescribed period. The money saved is earmarked for maintenance/repair and/or for the upgrade the medical equipments. Even though the said saved fund does not reach the target amount to buy a machine, the health facility or clinic owner will be able to save some amount to ease up in the payment of future purchase of upgraded equipment. This kind of product makes it easier for the clinic owner/health facility organization to " force save " without noticing it. It will be much lighter in terms of managing the finances of the health facility for that particular period of time. The incentive to subscribe to this bank " product " will be the special interest rate. A free equipment repair insurance coverage rider can be an option for this fund on certain amount bracket. 

Implementation of the Innovation

The special Savings Account is offered to a niche market of doctors/clinic owners and health care facility organizations. A monthly fixed deposit of choice, ranging from 5,000 pesos to hundreds of thousand pesos which will be debited from a mother/receivership account. This in turn will be deposited to an " Equipped for Equipments " Special Funds  Account. This special savings account will earn a special interest rate higher than ordinary savings account/time deposit. The higher the amount, the higher will be the interest rate. Features of the offer include three years of fixed amount monthly deposit to the special account. This is the lock in period wherein no withdrawal should be made in order to maintain the high interest rates. Should the depositor decided to withdraw the amount deposited, there will be a corresponding penalty computed that will be deducted upon withdrawal of the funds. Upon maturity of the funds on the third year, the funds will automatically be deposited back to the receivership account. The saved amount can be used to purchase upgraded medical equipments.

Two restaurant honchos were interviewed at Shop Talk last Thursday.  One was a seafood restaurant and the other was comfort food owner at Powerplant.   Both say that it is not that easy to survive in the business.  It takes a lot of innovation on constant basis to meet the customer needs and beat the competition

In the past class I had, and I recall a student put up a restaurant in a mall in Pampanga and she told us that the NU exercise was not enough.  She had to innovate on daily basis.

NU1: Fresh Salad Greens from Farm to Doorstep

Leading a healthy lifestyle is a growing concern. A primary consideration is eating the right food and knowing how it was grown. Freshness on delivery is likewise a challenge. This is almost impossible to do in a busy supermarket or grocery. Weekend markets may offer a solution but may still be tedious and at times inconsistent.  The need therefore arises for a steady reliable supply of naturally grown food delivered fresh to ones' doorstep.

The solution is linking a natural farm and its products to consumers by means of an online ordering application. This ensures that the food is delivered fresh and the supply meets the demand. The farm can offer its available products at  the appropriate harvest time and fill the orders according to demand. There is no wastage of supply as everything harvested has already been ordered. The food is harvested very early in the morning and delivered directly to consumers via pick-up points wherever convenient. Frequent ordering may eventually lead to a subscription service if so desired by the consumers. The key innovation here is improved access to products and connecting to a distinct customer segment.

NU2: Farm Equipment Rental

Farming techniques in the rural areas are laborious and slow. Cleaning a field for weeds and tilling the soil may take days of labor. Small-scale farmers often do not have the modern equipment to do these tasks easier and faster. Lack of capital to invest in equipment prevents the ordinary farmer from realizing a more abundant harvest. The need to be fulfilled is bringing modern farming equipment and machinery within the reach of the ordinary farmer. 

The solution is investing in small portable farm tractors and equipment that can be rented by farmers to make their processes more efficient. Foremost among the list is a tractor to till the soil (replacing the carabao), grass cutters, chain saws, portable rice mills and dryers. Equipment may be rented together with the operators to ensure proper care and maintenance. This should make our farmers more productive at a minimal cost to them. The innovation is improved access to technology resulting to improved productivity.

NU3: Tanay Mountain Bike Tour and Rental

The town of Tanay in the province of Rizal is a mountain biker's haven. There are many challenging and scenic trails to enjoy.  However most of these trails are uncharted and one can easily get lost in the terrain. There are some guides and suggestions from people who have experienced the ride as well as a few big tour operators (none local to the area). Getting to the trails is likewise challenging if one comes all the way from Manila. Having the right equipment (bikes, helmets, vehicle carriers) and logistics (food, drinks) also matter in a successful ride. The need arises for a local accredited bike tour operator to service the area.

The inspiration here is a tour operator providing services for white-water rafting in Cagayan de Oro. I was there for a business trip and had very limited time on my hands. The tour operator was able to provide the experience for the time window that I had with minimal preparation on my part.

A bike tour operator can provide detailed information on trails (highlights, difficulty levels), equipment (the bike itself, helmets, service) and logistics. One can enjoy a charted route with minimal preparation. It is very convenient for people who want the biking experience but do not have the complete equipment available to them. This may appropriate for novice and beginning riders, local and international tourists, and yes people who do not even own a bike. Bookings can be coordinated thru an online platform. Rental bikes can be secured with GPS trackers. The tour operator also provides employment to locals in the community effectively motivating them to preserve and care for the natural environment. The result is an improved appreciation for the sport and the locality of Tanay.

9. A raincoat that also doubles as an umbrella within the raincoat so that during sudden bursts of rain specially here in Manila we can get protected from diseases.

1.    Hydrocolloidal dressing with antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties that can also provide hemostasis for minor aesthetic procedures such as botox and dermal fillers. The small insertion point of needles during botox and dermal fillers can be dressed with approximately 0.5x0.5cm round hydrocolloidal material that has an adhesive ideal for sensitive skin and lasts for at least 24 hours.

2.    Fiberless sponge to reduce risk and probability of foreign body (fibers) being left behind in the operative field during surgery.

3.    Modified Silicone sheet with onion extract & polypeptides  that can be left on a scar for a prolonged period of time (at least 24 hours)  to increase patient compliance.

4.    Topical anesthesia for the skin that can be delivered through spray which can penetrate up to the dermal layer of the skin and can last for at least 2 hours.

5.    A topical antibiotic packaged in a small barrel (like that of a lip balm) with an attached snap on cap for ease of use, portability, convenience and compliance of the patient. The possibility of loosing the screw caps from topical creams or ointments can be lowered and sterility of medications can be maintained.

6.    A press powder that can deliver SPF 50 UVA/UVB protection as well as anti-acne medication. One major drawback with women who use cream based Sunscreen is the inability to reapply this during the day after they have applied their make-up. An advantage would also be the added benefit of an anti-acne ingredient which could increase patient compliance at the same time reducing the occurrence of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation due to acne.

7.    A software that can automatically measure distances between facial features to better aid the doctor in explaining existing asymmetry to patients prior cosmetic surgery or aesthetic procedure, as well as help a patient come to terms with a realistic expectation for the result.

8.    An ampule breaker that does not need any manipulation by a human hand, to prevent risk of accident.

9.    Puncture proof surgical gloves to lower risk of contamination and infection.

10.  A portable mirror that can show 2 perceptions of ones face. One that shows what a right eye dominant person can see, and the other showing what a left eye dominant person can visualize. To aid doctors and patients in cosmetic surgery and aesthetic procedures.

Poverty and hunger prevent Filipino kids from basic education.  One out of 6 shool-age Filipino is not enrolled, figures from the Department of Education and the National Statistics Board.

The net enrollment ratio (NER) or participation rate at the elementary level for school year 2006-2007 was 83.2 percent, down by 1.2 percentage points from the previous school year and a far cry from school year 1999-2000’s 96.95 percent. 

The NER is the ratio between the enrollment in the school-age range and the total population of that age range. That means that out of all Filipino children aged 6-11—which is the official age range for elementary pupils—17.8 percent or almost one-fifth are out of school. 

DepEd figures also show that from 1999 to 2007 participation in elementary education decreased, save for a 0.19-percentage point increase in 2002. 

The rate of participation in secondary education is even worse. From 2002 to 2007, almost half or 43.7 of all Filipinos aged 12-15—the official age range for high school—failed to enroll. This is lower than the participation rate of 65.43 percent in 1999-2000.

With these figures the country is still far from achieving the Millennium Development Goal of providing basic education to all, the NSCB said in its report. The Philippines is also far from achieving its own Education for All 2015 Plan, which serves as the blueprint for the country’s basic education.

Challenge

Families living under poverty line will set aside education from their priority lists and instead all bodies capable of getting up, walk few meters are bound to “toil” for food – that’s the reality of seeing children as early as 4 years old work and labor.
