How prepared are we to act and respond in times of emergencies?

In reality, no one really knows what will happen tomorrow, but we can always prepare or at the very least be aware of what's happening and respond accordingly.

I just saw an incident this afternoon on my way to Ateneo in Dela Costa. It was a car stuck on an island in Edsa, and its hood is burning in fire. As I passed by, I saw a couple of gasoline boys from a nearby gasoline station holding a fire extinguisher but they were hesitant to approach the car as it might explode since the fire is really strong and has the potential to reach the gasoline container. Most are just waiting for the authorities to arrive and hesitant as well to even approach if there's a driver inside or none. At that time, no one really knows whether helping would be helpful at all as it might put another person in danger.

While most Filipinos loved to watch televisions, there's not a single show that focus on how to respond in time of emergencies. While there are reminders, infomercials every now and then, none has really given an ample time to discuss on what to do on actual situation.

My suggestion is for the government or even any private stations to air a show focusing on this area. In this way, we would be able to teach and reach most of the Filipinos on how to respond in times of emergencies.

Sample topics can include what to do during the following situations:

* Trapped inside a house on fire
* Victim of a hold-up or robbery
* How to help someone having a heart attach
* Saw someone being robbed
* How to survive without food
* How to improvise with limited resources
* What to do during flash floods
* Where to evacuate if government calls for evacuation
* And a lot more...

Not only that this is helpful but who knows it might save more lives in the future.  4  (we need to have courses electives on disaster preparedness?)

With the recent road accidents that involve the death of innocent passengers, I'm wondering why is it easy to get a professional driver's license in our country knowing that if the line of work would entail the safety of the passengers, the qualification and requirement should go beyond just knowing how to drive and read the traffic signs.

Whenever these accidents happen, government's actions circle around suspension of franchise that normally targeted the business operations. Criminal or administrative charges normally follow against the driver.

We can't put all the blame to the drivers alone for they lack the necessary educations for them to act as a professional and a disciplined driver. Some of them did not even finished high school and some din't even had the chance to go to school at all. What are we expecting then?

I suggest that we uplift the way we treat and look at driving as a profession. They should be given a psychological assessment and training and this should involve their capacity to handle responsibility and accountability knowing that lives are at stake as they performed their jobs.

Those who won't be able to pass won't be given a professional driver's license regardless of their skill in driving.

In this way, we're making it harder for those who are psychologically incompetent of being a professional driver and at the same time assure the riding public that they are safe whenever they ride a public transportation.

While accidents can't be controlled, we can minimize the reason that it is caused by reckless driving as handled by an incompetent driver.  <we abandon standards pag may lagayan>  3

A Hazard Password

What if you have an ATM hazard password that you can use on instances like when you are being robbed. There are cases when the robbers will take you to an ATM booth and will ask you to withdraw money.

You can follow the instruction without putting yourself at risk and at the same time reporting the issue to the local police. If you use the hazard password it would automatically send a silent alarm to the nearest police station and inform them that a robbery is taking place.

The robbers won't have an idea as they would be able to take the money and they won't know if you use the real password or the hazard password.

If the police would be quick enough to respond, they would be able to track and intercept the robbers.

When it's good to be bad

An idea to eliminate corruption on the road by giving rewards to drivers who can discretely took a video of a police officer or traffic enforcer engaging in bribing activity. With the new technology and gadgets in the market today, this can be done seamlessly.

If the driver violates any traffic rule, his offenses can be waived if he can prove that the apprehending officer is giving indications that the offense can be settled through bribing. Furthermore, the driver will be given a reward and the amount should be high enough for it not to be ignored. Reward can range from 5K to 10K.

The video can be submitted discretely to the government in charge on fighting corruption. The driver who submitted the video will not be named and declared anonymous. Once the video has been authenticated and verified, the driver's offenses will be waived and afterwards he will get his reward money.  <hmm delikado>  3.5

Employee Investment Options

Industry data shows that only less than 1% of the Filipinos are investing in the stock market. Lack of knowledge is one of the reasons why we see less on the percentage of investors as compared to other countries in Asia.

My suggestion is to incorporate an investment package as part of the options given to newly hired employees in every company. This should be led either by a government or a private company.

Employees will just choose how much he or she is willing to invest every month and upon confirmation and approval, this will be automatically deducted to his monthly salary like SSS, Philhealth and Pag-Ibig.

The government led agency will then use and invest the money on income generating investments like stocks, bonds, and others.

As there are no assurances on the return and the profit to be generated, the employees may opt to modify the amount that they are willing to invest every year.

In this way, the government is not only helping its countrymen to earn & save but also involves them to engage in investing. 3

Managing your food intake

It is ironic that even with the increase on the interest of people towards healthy lifestyle and physically wanted to be lean, slim and sexy, less can you find the supply of low calorie and healthy food options. What if we create a device that manages the body's input of food, most especially the calorie count?

I remember the movie entitled "The Island", wherein the supply of food is controlled depending on the condition of the person. If the person is found to be high in blood pressure, his food options will be more on fiber and even if he wants bacon for breakfast he will be deprived of it.

Sound difficult right? Depriving yourself of eating what you want is the same as depriving yourself the freedom to enjoy life.
Thus, we need a personal device that gives us options on what type of food we can eat and how much do we need to intake to reach and achieve the daily goal on calorie intake.

This is how the device should work, you need to input your body's condition, weight, height, sugar level, blood pressure, HDL, LDL, cholesterol level, triglycerides etc. everything that is impacted every time you eat food or drink any form of liquid. Also, you can input physical activities for the day like exercises performed etc.

Now here's how the device should work, given the said condition it will give you options on what type of food you need to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner and it will also give you how much calorie you can take for the day.

This might sound like a simple diet plan given by dieticians but the difference is that the device is flexible enough to consider everything you had for the day, if you exercise today it should give you more options on food that you can take as the body needs more protein and energy. The same idea if you just sit there and no physical activities done for the day less will be the food options you can have.

I believe this should work as compared to existing diet plans as this is more realistic as it involves our choices and our actions.

Lastly, the device should be able to assess what works for you and what doesn't work. If you love broccoli but hate apple, it will give you options on the substitutes that you can take so as to get the equivalent nutrients supplied by those foods that you do not like to eat.  4

We see it all the time and it could easily tick us off whenever we encounter rude drivers on the road. Have you seen yourself driving and then someone decides to make a turn just to get ahead of you? Or someone trying to occupy your lane as if they are the only ones on the road, making you hit your break just to give the other person the space that he wanted? Rude right..

What if we ask these rude drivers if they really mean to drive rudely? They might say that they weren't being rude. They'd justify their actions in some way, usually blaming the person in front of them for being a bad driver. Most of the rude drivers are just impatient individuals.

However, giving the benefit of the doubt, there are occassion wherein you just need to hustle and drive your way to your destination the soonest time possible for reasons like emergency, call of nature, etc. And these could be the same people we perceive as rude drivers.

My recommendation is to equipped cars that can honk-a-talk. Meaning the cars through honking can send a message to the other driver. The supposedly rude drivers can use this feature especially if they cut off a lane from another driver.

The honk-a-talk equipment will call positive phrases like,

- Thank you, Have a nice day!
- Sorry, got an emergency
- Sorry, my bad
- Sorry, I'm a new driver

Surely, it is good to feel and receive that message from someone we perceived as rude. 3.5  <or have Led sign at the back that says so

A Metric-based Government

We are now on the era where everyone is thriving to cut cost and increase efficiency through taking advantage and exploiting today's technology. While there are many things that can be improved and automated, most still lies on the old brick and mortar approach in doing businesses and transactions.

It took me two days to finish a business transaction with Social Security System (SSS). Long lines on queue, manual process of writing and documenting, different counters or stations for a single task, staff that are chatting, are just some of the things that I observed that caused me a delay of two days before I complete my transaction with the said agency.

I'm not comfortable to see that while we see improvement on the majority of private businesses in the metro, like automation, computerization and online transactions, our government offices still lag behind.

Inside the offices are tables with a pile of papers and documents on top, and this is just a common sight. Where are the computers? Aren't they classified as income generating institutions?

I would recommend that all government agencies especially those that are providing service employ a metric based system in fulfilling its task. They need to analyze and study their overall performance not only on their financial targets but also on how they render or deliver their services. If one would compare how they are five years ago and where they are now, it would seem that nothing changes.

I'm not sure if there's someone from the group analyzing or even measuring the kind of service they are providing. If there is, then what are they doing as they see the challenges?

We need to employ a system where everything and everyone is measured by output and customer satisfaction. A metric-based system should improve service and enhance performance and productivity among its employees. This should lessen customer frustration and have a positive impact on how the people see the government.

This is easy said than done as most organization are resistant to change including government offices. This would involve leadership intervention and a will to implement the changes.

I'm looking forward for a better Philippines starting with the quality of service our government is providing. 3

ADJUSTABLE CARS

MMDA in its mandate continuously look for ways on how to ease up the traffic congestion in the metro especially in EDSA. Aside from undisciplined drivers for both public and private transportation we may need to look at capacity and the ideal volume that the road can handle. What's the vehicle capacity of EDSA? If EDSA is exceeding its limit then chances are we would really expect traffic all the time.

So while we are pursuing the regulations on how we can lessen the volume of vehicles traversing EDSA, through different schemes and policies, why can't we focus at the same time on increasing its capacity by decreasing the size of the vehicles itself?

How many cars can you find in the morning, where capacity is maximized, that all of the seats are used? Most of the time, it's just the driver himself on his way to work.

My recommendation is to build a car that features the capability to adjust its size depending on its load. It can be used as a normal sized sedan car if passengers including the driver reached five. The same idea when only the driver is present, it can be adjusted half the size of the car.

Isn't that great? We can lessen the space a standard car size usually takes and at the same time increasing the capacity of the road.   4 < Can this be done>
