What pisses you off at the school? What must be done?

 am assuming the system issue during enrollment has been raised so many times by the students so I will discuss a different concern.

I had a few instances where I experienced before that I was so ready to enroll a subject but the system didn't allow me because there was at that time, a pre-requisite subject I have to complete first before taking that subject. I thought it was just a system glitch or an issue with the system so I raised the concern. And I was told that it is not a system glitch and I should take the subject first before enrolling the subject I prefer that time and so I went back online to register for that class, just to feel upset afterwards because there were no available slots for that class anymore. Frustrating right? A student might have planned on the number of years he/ she has to spend in graduate school since there is a "residency rule" to be followed, but then because of lack of information, being provided by the school to the students, on the proper flow of subjects to be taken, he / she will be delayed.

What must be done to solve this concern?

-Properly update the curriculum flow provided on the website, showing the correct order of subjects to be taken by a student or indicate whether a subject has a pre-requisite or not.

-Indicate also whether a subject is offered every term or not.

Another annoying issue:

-There are only some computer units in the library (Computer Section to be specific)  which will enable you to insert your flash drive and save your work. Not all the units are flash-drive ready.  I finished all my research for a paper so I thought I'll just polish it at home but by the time I inserted my flash drive to save my work, I couldn't save it. Argh! What if it is for a presentation and the all the flash-drive capable units are being used?

Suggestion to solve:

-Put a sign that these units in this area are not available if you'll save your work on a flash drive so the students would be aware which one to use.

Another annoying issue: Sockets not working

Most of the sockets installed in the library are not working especially the ones near the tables.

Solution: Ensure all the sockets are working.

Another annoying issue: Not well-lighted, causes eye strain

-A section in the library not well-lighted, unfavorable in reading books or other materials

Solution: For me, a library is the best place to enrich one's knowledge so install a proper lighting conducive for reading.  4

NU 12:  Move for Cleaner Environment

I always do my diesel fuel up with the big 3 gasoline stations (Shell, Petron, Caltex), though independent stations are lower in prices, but for me the big 3 is more reliable and have a cleaner fuel than any other players.  Since last year I already heard of the Unioil's Euro IV Fuel Compliant, my husband convinced me to try the Euro IV Diesel.  The idea that I have to switch product did not appear enticing to me, so I stick to what I'm currently using.

It was during one of those weekends on our way to visit my mother in Cavite area that changes my fuelling up habit and make a move in contributing to a cleaner environment.  During that time, while travelling along the Emilio Aguinaldo Hi-way the fuel gauge falls below the usual ¼ reading which I should normally be fuelling up.  Along EA hi-way I know that there are many stations I can select especially the big 3, but while driving I made a decision that it is true I cannot give up using my vehicle as me and my family's means of transportation but I need to contribute something better somehow.  I pull over into the Unioil's station and have a diesel full tank before I changed my mind.  While fuelling up I let the station boy discussed to me the advantages of using the Euro-IV diesel, some points I already know but others I still need to confirm if it's true.  Upon arriving at my mother's house, the first thing I did was researched about the Euro IV diesel, to support my conviction that I made a right choice. And here's what I found out…

Unioil's new fuel is rolling out a full three years ahead of the mandated Euro IV-capable fuels in 2016 as mandated by the national government, which should be sold exclusively by all petroleum and fuel retailers in lieu of older Euro II fuels.  So what's so special about Unioil's diesel?

Ø  Dubbed Euro Diesel IV, it is the only diesel fuel that is Euro IV-certified.

Ø  Euro IV fuels are cleaner, have lower sulphur content and, crucially, emit only 50 parts per million of sulphur. A reduction of 90 percent compared to the current 500 parts per million, to between 20 and 30 parts per million offered by Unioil.

Ø  Other noxious gases and particulates from exhaust emissions were reduced by as much as 83 percent.

Ø  Far less dark exhaust emissions

Ø  Engine will last longer and other engine components like filter, catalytic converter and the like.

Ø  Euro Diesel IV also has a higher cetane rating (a measure of diesel fuel's burn and ignition quality), which contributes to be more fuel-efficient, offer quieter and less vibration-prone engine operation, offer better cold-start performance (the vast majority of when engines emit the most pollution and are inefficient), emit less dark smoke on a cold start.

Ø  It also has special lubricating additives to protect engines, specifically CRDi and turbocharged injection systems, making it a good match for today's new breed of efficient and highly powerful diesel engines, with a good bias to performance.

Ø  Can mix Euro Diesel IV with other diesel fuel types and encounter no problems, as well as on diesel vehicles older than 2006 models.

I am not promoting Unioil here; right now Unioil and Seaoil are the ones distributing a Euro IV compliant fuel both diesel and gasoline.  What I'm after is the idea that somehow I am able to contribute even a little effort to reduce pollution in the environment.  It is almost a month now that I used Euro IV diesel, but it's not that convenient to me because I have to re-route just to fuel up, no Unioil stations near to my house and to places I usually travel.  I always check my fuel gauge and now I include visit to Unioil in my itinerary not like before that I can refuel when the need arises.  I even have a copy of Unioil's branches in my phone, just a risk measure if we want to travel out of town; I know where to fuel up.

I just hope the big 3 will follow soon not waiting for the national government mandate of Euro-IV compliant by 2016.  The environment had suffered much; it's time to exert effort to save it!  (3)  <better magcommute>

            Credit cards for others may find it a burden but it's the other way around for me.  Starting this year I find it advantageous to use my credit cards as medium for my spending, and I even gain a profit from using it, contradicting from a common connotation that you will have a credit by using a credit card.  Here's what I did to maximized and utilized my credit card effectively.

            First, it is important that I know my billing statement cycle. From this I was able to calendar my big purchases for me to pay it for next month and to hold the money intended for buying it to other things.  Second, if I can avail of a 0% (zero percent) installment basis (maximum of 6 months) for a certain purchase, I grab it.  Third, using credit cards entitles me to earn points and food vouchers which I use during our mall visits, my "pasalubong" when visiting relatives, and share it with friends.  Lastly, when its pay time, it should be pay time!  I settle my whole balance for the current month to prevent the finance charge from occurring.  Why then I opted to use my credit card if I still pay the whole balance when the billing statement arrives?  The answer is I used the money for my private lending business for individuals, instead of cash spending I used credit cards so that I have something to lend for my loaners.  The profit I gain  from lending is not that really big but the idea is why not grab the opportunity given by somebody to use their money for spending (credit cards) then paying them on time to avoid finance charges while your own money is working for you.  3

A recent stroll in the heart of the busy streets in Cainta opened my eyes on the many opportunities that my city can offer. Cainta, being one of the most urbanized towns in Rizal due to its proximity to Manila, serves as one of the main gateways for travelers to the province of Rizal.

1. Laundry shop for a cause - Regular laundry shop may schedule free dry cleaning or ironing of coat for unemployed Cainta residents who have a scheduled job interview. This can create a buzz and may bring good publicity to the laundry shop. This initiative signifies support to the local government's focus on job-generating opportunities and projects. 

2. Promote delicacy store - Uploading of pictures of Aling Kika's Kakanin and other delicacy stores in our Facebook and other social networking sites help spread to our network that we have good products to try when they visit. 

3. Umbrellas for rent in local convenience stores--residents may be allowed to borrow umbrella by leaving any government-issued ID or by paying a minimal cost

4. Be-your-own-foreman - lending of construction materials (hammer, screw driver, saw, etc.) at a minimal cost by construction hardwares to families whose main man of the house is working abroad or in nearby cities

5. Cainta River Cruise - A 3- or 5-year program that encourages residents to take care of the river for future job creation (e.g. cruise to foreign guests; cruise can offer a whole new way to see an exotic locale)

6. Rent Some Chicks - A regular pet store may offer a rent scheme at a cost to families who wanted to experience having farm fresh eggs in their backyard; to be rented: 2 hens, coop, accessories, food, etc.); target market: residents in private subdivisions and villages

NU 12:  What pisses you off at the mall? What do you suggest?

            There is one thing that really pisses me off upon entering at the mall (especially at SM Malls), it's the way how checking and scanning of bags (security checks) were done.  The stationed guard on duty will request you to put your bag on the table and inspect manually using a wooden stick like device. With the help of that "stick", the guard will check on the things inside for seconds and then you will be allowed to enter if they cannot see visible harmful things inside the bag.   How about pockets? Checking is only done on the main compartment of the bag.  I think this system seems to me old-fashioned and a waste of time.  People queuing for their bags to be checked, but still many incidents of robbery are still happening inside the mall.  Even committing suicide and murder using gun happened in the mall.

I get so irritated often times, I questioned the security guards why they always require for the bags to be opened and used their "magical stick" for checking; why not use the handheld metal detector on their waist to make it faster?  Their reply was it's because the handheld metal detector devices cannot check accurately metal objects in the bag. The country's biggest mall operator cannot even provide a better security check aside from a handheld metal detector and a stick for security inspections???  Thousands of mall goers shops everyday but still they are not very serious on providing security for their customers, why only handheld metal detector, how about the explosives?

Why not utilize a more sophisticated scanner for security checks to ensure safety among mall goers.  A scanner with a conveyor perhaps, so that bags can pass through that device and a scanner for human, for any harmful objects that might be attached on the human body.  I know it's very costly compared to what they are using right now but in doing business, owners should give priority to the safety and security of its customers.  <or like what they use in airports>

I know I'm right when I say that everyone, meaning, the human race, wants to be fit and to stay fit. Every one of us struggles to control our weight. People enroll at gyms; do physical activities such as biking, surfing, running, etc. to lose unwanted fat and at the same time to be healthy. People usually have a hard time keeping count of the calorie intake for the day. In the Philippines, our diet consists of pork, chicken, beef, seafood, rice, and of course, more pork. A lot of us struggle to watch our calorie intake.

I was talking to a friend of mine about fitness and weight loss. And then we talked about how much calories a person needs. Then she came up with the idea; what if everyday items such as pots and pans, utensils, and other things you can use that can count the calories for you?

Apparently, there's an app that you can download that comes with a gadget that lets you identify the ingredients that a dish has. Now, take that technology and somehow, identify the ingredients, measure the amount of each ingredient used, and at the same time give the calorie count for each. And what a better way to do that with pots and pans, food containers, and something that you can bring with you anywhere.

NU 12 Idea Entry Conduction sticker 2 by Rocky Gabatin

Despite the fact that the MMDA included the conduction sticker number as part of the Number Coding Scheme, this has only been implemented more strictly in less than 2 years. Along with this stricter implementation is the requirement to put the conduction sticker number as plate numbers for registered cars that are yet to receive the official vehicle plates.

The problem is there is no standard for this, so motorist go about their own style to abide by the rule. Some car dealers print out the conduction number on a paper and laminate the paper to "protect" it from disintegrating when exposed to weather conditions. However, this "protection" is not enough, as I have seen blurred out numbers from even slight drizzle. There are also some methods such as penning the number with a marker on the default, temporary plates of newly purchased vehicles. The problem with this is it is too small to be read.

The solution: All Land Transportation Offices should provide a standard temporary plate with the conduction sticker number of the vehicle upon its release to the respective dealers. Alternatively, LTO and MMDA can mandate car dealers to develop its own temporary plates following a standard format and material.

This will help law enforcers in enforcing the law. More importantly, this will also likely to tap businesses that can service this. Suppliers would be more than happy to bid to LTO or to car dealers--bolstering local micro-enterprises. 3.5  (raket ni VT, shooting mate ni Prez)

When we get a hold of money either from a windfall or simply from our regular monthly income, we tend to immediately think of ways to spend it rather than save it. This Spending Mindset has always been a problem and is even synonymous to Earning Money.
Early this year, some of the New Year's resolutions that are posted in social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter are promises of conscious budgeting and wishlists of items that one wants but may not need. And so I wonder, how many of these people are actually planning to set a budget to save and not to spend?
Most Filipinos know the different ways on how to save and reduce expenses. But many also feel that they are missing out on something by cutting back on spending. Advertisers in the Philippines have succeeded in convincing people that lives are more miserable or less fun by not purchasing certain products and services, hence, people always tend to save to spend for these.
I believe that while we're still at the first quarter of the year, we must cultivate a culture of saving thru a campaign on The Saving Mindset which focuses on saving to invest and not to spend. The best way to change one's mindset is by learning to take pride in actually saving money. Sure we can have a some guilty pleasures but generally, we need to make saving something that we almost want to boast about.
As I am part of the average income earners, I'd like to start influencing people around me to enjoy working hard and see work not just as a way to get money to spend but also to save money and the fun challenge of growing it. After all, we cannot work for our entire lifetime. And while our bodies are still able to absorb the stress and physical toll that comes from working 8 hours a day (sometimes more), we must think of saving and investing for our future.

Summer is fast approaching!  It's the time where we go places, spend time with families & friends, explore & be one with nature, and see the beauty of our country. But one (1) dilemma I have is how to communicate with the people on those different places. I only knew three (3) Filipino dialects: Tagalog, Waray, & Ilocano. As for the Waray & Ilocano dialect I can say that I'm only 10-15% familiar and don't know how to speak but only understand some words.  

Did you know that there are more than 175 languages being used here in the Philippines? Here are some popular Filipino dialects which you might know: Tagalog, Cebuano, Kapampangan, Tausug, Waray, Ilocano, Chavacano, Hiligaynon (Ilonggo), etc…  

The idea is to create a mobile app that provides an accurate translation of these different dialects.

What's the major cause of a flood here in Metro Manila?

Yes! It's the clogged drainages!

Instead of de-clogging the drainages during the time of a storm or even before the wet season, why don't we renewed our Filipino attitude / habit with regards our rubbish?

Most of us are lazy in throwing our garbage in the trash bins, or even simply placing it first in our pockets when there's no available trash bins especially with the small candy wrappers, papers, plastics, etc… Why? Because we don't want to place any unwanted trashes in our pockets, we don't want to carry rubbish, there's no trash bins, or we just don't care about it.

The solution/idea is to place many (as in many) trash bins in our neighborhoods, villages, side streets, houses, offices, establishments, tourist spots etc… This sounds funny and expensive, but this will save us from future floods (which is more expensive) and will eventually build the habit of throwing thrashes in the bins.   3

Carpooling is common means of transportation; it is also called as car-sharing, ride-sharing, and/or lift-sharing. Carpooling is the sharing of car journeys merely travelling in almost the same destination so that more than one person travels in a car.

Benefits of carpooling:

1.      Reduces driver's cost (by sharing of gas, & toll fee)

2.      Reduces traffic congestion

3.      Saves environment (reduces carbon footprint)

4.      Need of a parking space

5.      Convenience for passengers/commuters

6.      Safety among the group (esp. when the group knows each other)

Mostly, carpooling are being present to family members, friends, neighbors, and officemates. The chance of being part in a carpool is, if you have a family member/friend/neighbor/officemate that has his own car and willing to offer you the available seat in his car. So this carpooling is not being offered to all commuters. Also, drivers who have less acquaintances cannot max out his car's seating capacity.

What is e-Carpooling?

It'll be a tool (a website for easy access to everyone) that will bridge passengers who prefers to ride in a carpool for his/her day-to-day means of transportation and drivers who wants to ensure that every time he roll out his car out his garage maximizes his earnings thru a full & secured seating capacity.

How it works?

Drivers to register their personal data (for safety purposes) in the website, then car type, seating capacity, and target pick-up point and point of destination (like Makati, Ortigas, Cubao, Eastwood, etc...).

Then on the website will reflect the available carpool per pick-up point, destination, and fare.
