Demand for desalinated water in Cebu goes by 60%

New ideas create better quality of life and wealth

January 11, 2015

Mactan Rock Industries Inc (MRII) Chairman Antonio Tampar reported a 60% increase in the consumption of desalinated water in Cebu. The largest consumer are hotels malls and industrials.  They set up the largest desalination plant in the country with Pilipinas Water Resources.  Their plant is capable of supplying 22,000 cubic meters of desalinated water a day.  It promises to be back up for adequate water supply in case of shortage.

Desalination processes brackish or sea water by either thermal or reverse osmosis process (the sea water is pumped at high pressure at 1,000 psi through polyester membrane which causes brine to separate from fresh pure water.  This means desalination is an energy intensive process and makes the water from desalination costlier than fresh unprocessed water from water districts.

MRII has 50 outlets nationwide which means desalination is accepted in the country now.

They build and supply filtration aside from SWRO. They have BOOM scheme.   Build  Own, Operate and Manage

New ideas for biking

New ideas create better quality of life and wealth

In my class in entrepreneurship, I encourage students to be creative and to exercise their minds in finding low cost solution, low tech solutions to their problems.

Bike gadgets can be very expensive and you must devise ways to to create cheap solutions

Some of them:

1.  bottom of the bike and stays  mud, rock and scratch, rubber guard made from old tire interior and cable ties;

2.  lens cleaner for eyeglasses and sports wear from the old container;  the contents are made from water and joy diswashing fluid.  No expenses and clean as good.  The new cleaner costs P129,00

california drought monitor

Climate change reveals that even in USA, as featured in National Geo, there is widespread drought.    There are farming communities in California that died simply because there is no more water to grow plants with, or drink, and even to wash and bathe.

                                                               California Drought

The solution that is seen is desalination since California is a coastal state and near the Pacific Ocean.  However, desalination is costly since this both capital and op ex intensive.  Operating the plant is costly with the two methods currently employed:   thermal and reverse osmosis.   (SWRO - Salt Water Reverse Osmosis)   The process too uses a lot of energy since salt water is pumped at high pressure 1000 psi through the semi permeable membrane to separate salt from pure water;  brine is then pumped back to the sea water, the pure water is stored and then pumped to the waterworks system.

New Ideas Create New Products and Wealth

Philippines  January 1, 2016

Scientists mixed neptunium oxide with aluminum and pressed the result into pellets. They then irradiated the pellets to create neptunium-238, which decayed quickly into plutonium-238.

It is going to be a very good new year.  Prosperous new year wish to every one.

Let us review the year that was in top innovation  -   From LiveScience

Top 10 Breakthrough New Ideas in 2015 from MIT

New Ideas Create Wealth and Prosperity

Here is a list of top 10 new tech ideas in 2015 from MIT

What I like and which I think are easy to apply and where needs are most urgent:

.
1.  Project Loon of Google using 20 km high helium balloon to bring ineternet access to remote places of the globe.  About 60% of the world population do not have internet acess

2.  Megascale desalination plant by Sorek in Israel, which is cheaper and more efficient can solve world's shortage of fresh water supply.  There is a shortage of world supply among 700 million of world's population.  Sorek produces 20% of Israel water's need.  It costs only 58 cents to produce one cubic meter of water, about same cost as retail water in PHL, and 50% less than other desalination plant

3.  Liquid biopsy using DNA testing for early detection of cancer Discovered by Dr. Dennis Lo of China. Could help reduce deaths from cancer due to early cancer detetection

4.  Growing brain organoids from stem cells for helping regrow brain tissues ravaged by old age and injuries.  Studies by Madeline Lancaster
