NU6 #2 by Pia Miranda - Misfuelling detector

Gas Nozzle Detector
by: Pia Miranda

Franchising is one of the fastest growing business sector in the Philippines. According to PFA (Philippine Franchising Associate), even a sum of PHP 200,000 can serve as a start-up investment for a middle-class Filipino. With the rapid growth automobiles, Gas Station Franchise is one of the most highly searched option for franchising in the Philippines as the public needs fuel for automobiles.

Through the years, my family is into franchising gas stations. My father told me that gas station may be a good investment yet it is not easy ,since it requires a lot of expert understanding of the industry to able to manage it well and to avoid problem that may hinder the success of the franchisor. Having a good or right location, which usually a high traffic area, does not guarantee 100% success of the business. It is more than the location, the owner and his people should be hard working, have the necessary skills to perform the job well and a little luck to be successful. All business man have their own share of problems, and our problem in the business is usually misfuelling.

Accidentally putting up the wrong fuel in your costumers vehicle can lead to several situation... Customer complaint that can lead to no repeat business, hence sales lost and worse to a more expensive damage such as potential engine damage. The idea that I thought of is to create an alarm to gas nozzle in such a way it can detect the right fuel for the vehicle. The idea is a like a fire alarm, that can sense things that are related to fire that when it pass thru the chamber of the detector it will trigger the alarm. In the same way as when fueling a vehicle, the gas nozzle alarm detector can determine if the gas is the right fuel for your car. In this way, gas station owners can lessen the possibility of putting up the wrong fuel to their customers cars thus avoiding customer complaints and damage on both the customer and the gas station personnel.

NU 6 Product Name: Security Blanket

Product Name:         Security Blanket

Description:   The Security Blanket provides optimum protection for you and your family while you're on your out-of-time vacation, sleeping soundly in the middle of the night, out with your friends and whatnot. Security blankets are bolts attached to the fence that releases 12 milliamperes (mA) that paralyzes the nervous system momentarily if a person is exposed to it for more than 10 seconds.

How it works: The bolts are attached inside the fences and are connected to one another to produce a 2mX4mX12in static field. Burglars/offenders are given a warning to keep off the fence during the initial contact that may last for 5 seconds. However, an exposure to the fence for more than 10 seconds will produce voltage enough to paralyze the nervous system for one hour. Victims are conscious during the whole duration of paralysis however, any movement is unavailable. Victims will be revived automatically after the hour has lapsed.

(NU6) 5 of 6 - by Angelbert Orseno AGSB Clark - Company Convenience Store Using Company ID

Angelbert M Orseno

Prof Jorge Saguinsin

ENTREP – AGSB, Clark

Background

In a fast-paced busy life a typical day of an office worker or employee consists of an average of 4hours travel time and 10hours work period time; equating it means one must be up at 5am, start the travel at 6am, reaching the office at 8am, doing work until 5pm and start traveling back home at 6am. Assuming no congestion and packed public transport one can reach home if lucky by around 8pm – this period, for 6 days a week obviously takes out family quality time.

In between this routine period or towards the period of going back home the office worker would tend to buy basic house supplies like canned goods, rice, bread, eggs, kitchen and cooking items, etc and many times the hours spent doing this after work marketing contributes to the delay of reaching back home.

Challenge

If the in between or after work marketing chores could be removed or lessen the saved time is more than enough to cover traveling time and that translates to more quality time for the family.

Innovative Service – Company Convenience/Grocery Store Using Company ID as Purchased Medium

Process

Company set-ups a convenience or grocery store inside premise. It setup also an online purchase system where the purchaser identification is tagged in his/her company ID like bar-code. An employee is entitled a certain amount that is within his/her available salary. At every 30 minutes during time-off (lunch break, coffee break or end of day period) the system will open and employee can punch-in their purchases using their computers and their company card. The sale process is completed upon online system check-out. Employee can just then pick-up the purchase (bagged, sorted, packed, etc) upon exit of company premise. The purchase cost can be deductable to the salary in agreed terms.

Benefits

The process eliminates the time needed for an employee to drop by to the grocery or stores to do marketing of basic supplies and needs. It also eliminates borrowing of money (which most of the time has interest) in case if it is not yet the salary day. The benefit of the payment scheme allows the employee for a budgeted spending.  3

NU 6 by Unknown Author AGSB Clark - Charity Shop for a Medical Foundation( Dialysis on Wheels or Breast Cancer)

When I was in England a few years ago, I visited some shops that sell different items with cheap prices.  The shops were called charity shops and supported specific foundations for medical health and research.  There were shops for breast cancer research, blood disorders, pediatric  diseases etc.  The goods sold were books, second hand clothes and new clothes, furniture ,  jewellery , kitchen appliances , antiques etc., some items were also in mint condition.  I enjoyed shopping for a cause.  I learned from my friend that these were non-profit stores and were opened to support legitimate projects.

So now I think that such "ukay-ukay" stores can be opened here to do the same mission of supporting a cause like a Dialysis on Wheels/Service ,to decrease the cause of the procedure.  In England, the people who do some spring cleaning in their homes  usually donate the goods to the charity shops and this idea can be promoted here especially now that the middle class sector is increasing and the average Filipino household have  accumulated some stuff that they can donate.

NU 6 by Unknown Author AGSB Clark entrepreneurship : Antibiotic Lollipops

I have observed that 50 % of my pediatric patients had difficulty in taking their prescribed medicines.  The toddlers are the most difficult ones.  Personally even my daughter was hospitalized due to pneumonia because of poor compliance and intake of medicines.

Some liquid medicines now are flavoured but despite of this,  some patients still spit and close theirs mouths when the syrup is given.  I think the "vehicle " for the medicine must be change into a candy form just like a lollipop.   Children will be attracted to the candy on a stick and won't be threatened by "the swinging spoonful of medicine".

At present antibiotic beads are use for bone infections, radioactive implants for some cancers ,maybe the development of candies will be a breeze for pharmaceutical companies. 4

NU 6 by (unknown author) AGSB Clark entrepreneurship - private agricultural school

NU 6 private agricultural school/training center

One of my future business plans is to be a proponent of organic farming in the country and to grow a botanical garden in my town.  From my experiences in the past 10 years of farming and gardening, I always find it hard to recruit conscientious gardeners and agriculturist.  I have observed that the human resources I had were challenged in values and proactivity.  All of them had short term plans for their lives and did not appreciate that  in the plant business or agribusiness  time is needed just like a tree to grow slowly.

I think it is a good idea to have a privately owned agricultural school / training center to professionalize the agribusiness sector.  The students will also be hired immediately by my company's backward integration strategy to supply my cassava and glutinous rice needs.  Also the growth of the botanical garden can be sustained,  and later duplicated in other areas of the country.  As of this time, I have recruited a graduate of agronomy to help me with the vision.

A private school for agriculture can also glamorize this sector of the economy simply because the youth looks at it in a demeaning manner.  My strategy to keep abreast with the latest organic trends and latest machines will facilitate the practicums and curriculum.  Initially scholarships can be offered for qualified and interested students  3.5  <authorless>

Mobile Medical/Surgical Service Unit and Dialysis Service Unit

I personally do house calls for my cancer patients who are terminally ill, geriatric patients who do not have relatives who come handy in their sickness , pediatric   patients with special needs ,and patients with chronic renal failure who can not afford dialysis. As  a community physician and surgeon I extend my service  out of love more than out of duty.

During my home visits, I usually experience some inadequacies when I have to do special procedures and diagnostic examinations.  I have always dreamt  to have a mobile clinic that can optimize my services to the physically challenged. Now,  dialyzable patients are also increasing in number.

The mobile medical service unit with a dialysis machine can  cater to other postoperative patients of other surgeons or other specialist.  A coordinated scheme can be implemented to optimize and economize continuing health services.

Patients on dialysis spend a lot of time for their treatment that is done twice or thrice a week. Usually they allot 6 to 10 hours of travel, queuing  and therapy.  A mobile unit can actually alleviate their situation and provide comfort to their weak bodies. < Dr Edu's?> 4

Organic Pesticide Soap (NU-6 #6)
By Verman T.Reyes

One of the problems facing farmers in using pesticides is that they are bulky and expensive. Also they are chemical base. Which could harm the health of farmers.

I've never seen in the market organic pesticide soaps even in other countries. I think this is a good product to manufacture because it is safe and easy to use.

Organic pesticide soaps can have ingredients made from lemongrass, chillies, garlic and other plants that can pesticidal effect from insects.

Great thing about this is that each ingredient will have a rating on effectivity of pesticidal effect on different insects so that they could use it specifically on insects so not to harm other insects.

Example: lemongrass soap can be more effective in controlling fruit flies or can be used in controlling insects that attack the fruits of mangoes or ampalaya.

Other special function of this soap is that it will have surfactant in the ingredients. This liquid solution made from the soap will stick in the leaves, branches, twigs so that the scent of the soap will remain on the sprayed area.

As for research and development,we will be looking for local plants that have high concentrate on pesticidal effect on insects.

How to use:

1. Get 16 liters of water in a container
2. Use the soap and if the water has produced bubbles it means there is enough concentrate of soap solution.
3. Put solution in knack sprayer to be used in spraying in crops.
4. As for the remaining soap, put back in its package to be used again. 3

ENTREP – AGSB, Clark

Background

The Philippine economy is on its road to becoming “Asia’s roaring tiger” from what it is previously branded as the “sick man of Asia”.

Some of evident changes and development today are: increased road security through closed circuit tv/cameras, regulated transport services, road condition improvement, road widening projects, police visibility and many more. It will not be far when portion of our roads will be converted to motorcycle lanes which will add to secure and safe commuting and personally I would like to see this in my life time.

These development can be tapped and leveraged for the improvement of other areas of public services like Education.

Challenge

As roads become more congested, the number of students increase and considering future cycle lanes it will be beneficial for students to have a transport medium that is convenient, free and hazard-safe.

NU 6 by Bong Canlas AGSB Clark Smartphone Application to Monitor Hospital Bill

Sir, good evening again.  Here is my 4th NU6.  Thanks again.  - Bong Canlas

Smartphone Application to Monitor Hospital Bill
By: Jose Tiburcio S. Canlas
Monitoring of hospital bills has not been easy for patients at Mother Teresa of Calcutta Medical Center.  Actually, inquiries for billing updates may be made in the billing window that is provided for this purpose.  A billing clerk is designated to receive requests for billing updates.  When requested, the billing clerk will print the updated patient statement of account and give it to the requesting party.  The problem here is that, if you are a 142 bed capacity hospital, it is not surprising to see long lines in the billing window. This discourages some patient relatives in falling in line and making inquiries for billing updates.
We have heard many cases of patients or their relatives complaining that they were not aware that their hospital bill has reached such a high amount until the discharge time.  When this happens, patients or their relatives become angry and would normally ask for a meeting with any member of the management team to voice out their complaint.  It is such a waste of management time if this happens over and over again.  Worse, if the patients are really incapable of producing enough funds to settle the final hospital bill, the Credit and Collection Department would have no other option but to authorize the discharge of the patient after signing a promissory note. This adversely affects the liquidity of the hospital.
The solution I have thought regarding this problem is a smartphone application which will be installed to the smartphone provided by the patient upon admission.  This is not possible only for patients who cannot provide a smartphone. But that would be a rare case.  From the time of admission of the patient and the installation of the application, the hospital bill may be monitored from time to time.  The application will also include a calculator which can compute the estimated hospital bill of the patient for every additional day of stay in the hospital.
This installation of the hospital bill application can result to a lot of good things.  First, the patients and their relatives can effectively monitor the hospital bill.  If they find that they are exceeding their budget, they can request to be transferred to lower rate rooms or even to hospitals where rates are lower such as government hospitals.  Second, this will significantly reduce the complaints for unexpected high hospital bills which result to waste of management time.  Third, this will save on office supplies since there would be no need to print the patient statement of account. 4

NU6 - by Bong Canlas AGSB Clark -Cheaper Priced Rooms for TomoTherapy Patients

Cheaper -Priced Rooms for TomoTherapy Patients
By: Jose Tiburcio S. Canlas
Mother Teresa of Calcutta Medical Center will soon start operating its newly acquired cancer treatment equipment, the TomoTherapy.  TomoTherapy performs image – guided radiation treatment using intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).  Compared to linear accelerator, cancer patients get better and faster treatment using TomoTherapy.
According to the study conducted in our hospital, we will be attracting patients not only from Pampanga but also patients from other places is our equipment is just the second TomoTherapy in the Philippines and the only one in Central Luzon.  The first to acquire and operate TomoTherapy is Makati Medical Center.  Each cancer patient will need an average of 20 therapy sessions performed in 20 consecutive days on an outpatient basis.  Patients coming from other places far from the location of our hospital will naturally need rooms where they could lodge in while the 20 day therapy sessions are in progress.
We have thought of constructing another building so we could have additional hospital medical rooms for our TomoTherapy patients.  However, there are certain staffing requirements by the DOH which need to be complied with in order to operate the additional rooms.  That would be too costly on the part of the hospital.  On the part of the patient, that would entail higher cost also since we will be charging higher rates to recover our higher overhead. <ingenious>
Here is the solution. We will construct another building which will contain non – medical rooms.  If needed, we will create a separate entity to operate these non – medical rooms. The operation of these rooms will not need a DOH license.  We will not need nurses and other medical staff to run these rooms. These rooms will be operated just like apartelle rooms. The rooms will even be larger than medical rooms in order to accommodate the relatives accompanying the patients.  That would save us a lot  on overhead costs and TomoTherapy patients would benefit  from lower priced but much better facilities. 4

NU 6 by Bong Canlas - AGSB Clark - Biometrics for ATM Cards

Hello Sir, this is my 6th NU6. Thanks a lot sir.  - Bong Canlas

Biometrics for ATM Cards
By: Jose Tiburcio S. Canlas
There have been reported cases of unauthorized withdrawals from bank accounts through the use of ATM Cards.  The illegal activity is performed by secreting a card reader with a memory chip into the ATM machine.  When a user then inserts its ATM card into the machine to perform a transaction such as balance inquiry or withdrawal, the card reader copies the data from the ATM card.  A camera is also placed somewhere near the machine in order to acquire the cardholder's personal identification number.
I have one office mate who is maintaining an account with a checkbook and an ATM card. There was a time when he issued a check for a certain amount which he thought was sufficiently funded by his account.  To his surprise, one bank employee called him to inform him of a check he issued for which there was an insufficient fund.  He was forced to go to the bank to inquire of the transactions which led to the loss of his deposits.  He was given a statement of account which showed a series of withdrawals performed in a number of consecutive days until the account was depleted.  He remembered that two days before the unauthorized withdrawal, he made an ATM withdrawal from one of the ATM machines inside Marquee Mall.  He then checked with his bank in what specific locations the unauthorized withdrawals were made.  The specific locations were determined to be in certain places in Manila.  Luckily, there were CCTV cameras in the specific locations that were identified.  Upon reviewing the recorded videos, it turned out that the withdrawals were made by a certain foreign looking man.
Hearing my office mate's story, I myself have decided to limit the use of my ATM cards.  I have thought that as an additional security for the use of ATM cards, why not replace the PIN with the cardholder's biometric fingerprints.  I have thought of this when in one of my visits to the Pampanga capitol, I have seen a GSIS machine which GSIS members can use to check and perform transactions with GSIS.  As I went near the machine and read the instructions for its use, I learned that the cardholder would need to insert his card into the machine and then he would need to insert his right thumb into the biometric reader.  If accepted, then the cardholder can start doing transactions.  I then thought that could also be applied for bank ATM machines.  That would provide more security as the fingerprint would be harder to copy than the personal identification number. 3

NU6 by Jopet Pineda AGSB Clark - Translation Apps for schoolchildren

Hi Prof. Jorge,
Below is my NU6.
TRANSLATOR APP
Many Filipino parents nowadays encourage their children to use English as their primary language to help their children adopt easily when they enter school. However, this led to many children having difficulty understanding and speaking Filipino and their local dialects. These children face a great deal of challenge when they study the subject of Filipino and Araling Panlipunan which is also taught in Filipino. They encounter difficulty reading and understanding Filipino literary works and grammar. To help them understand Filipino better, it would greatly help if there is a phone, tablet and a pc application where students can take a picture of their lessons in Filipino from their textbooks and convert the picture into a Word document. Once converted into a Word document, the application can help the student translate each Filipino word to English so they can understand what they are reading. This can be done by highlighting the words then the application shows the English translation without opening another translator application to check the meaning of the words. This would help the students understand and familiarize themselves with Filipino words and how they are used faster. The application would need a Filipino language expert to come up with a complete list of Filipino words and phrases with their English equivalent unlike most translation apps which are very limited. If the reading material is already in electronic form, my suggested application would also do the same of enabling the student to translate the Filipino words/phrases. The application also has an option to translate English or Filipino words to local dialects so the users can easily communicate in local dialect especially when they go to different provinces in the country with different dialects. 4

Thanks and regards.

NU 6 by Elizabeth Timbol - AGSB Clark Entrepreneurship - Alternative Organic Fertilizer

NU6 Idea 2: ALTERNATIVE ORGANIC FERTILIZERS
Fertilizer cost, with commercial inorganic fertilizers, comprises about 30% of the total production cost in rice and other major crops in the Philippines. But the present technology of inorganic commercial agricultural fertilizer is grossly inefficient, expensive and damaging to the environment.
The allegations are not without basis. Urea, agriculture's main source of Nitrogen, is only about 30% efficient as it is vulnerable to ammonia volatilization & greenhouse emission once exposed to air and moisture, a precursor to global warming, and nitrate leaching which is responsible for the eradication of beneficial living organism in the water ecosystem of agricultural communities.
Plant utilization of Phosphorous in Phosphate fertilizers, like 18-46-0, 16-20-0 & 14-14-14 is only about 30%. Once applied into the soil, 70% is immediately tied up in the soil as insoluble phosphorous. The soil is thus inundated yearly with massive insoluble phosphate fertilizers which the plants can't absorb and causing massive soil chemical imbalance and intensified heavy metals concentrations.
Water ecosystem in the countryside are now without fishes and other beneficial organism due to the unhampered leaching of nitrate in the river with the use of Urea as the nitrogen source.
In recent years farmers have been observed to reduce fertilizer usage by 30% due to their prohibitive cost thereby pulling down the national yield average per hectare in the Philippines.  Environmental groups and various government agencies are now in fervent search for a more efficient, cheaper and environment friendly alternative technology hence many are now going into organic farming.
The solution: organic acids (generic, patent pending), belonging to the carboxylic polymer family, acting as nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer efficiency enhancers that inhibit nitrification and thus NO3- leaching and N2 gas volatilization and phosphorus fixation which intensifies N and P solubility and availability within the growth period of most crops.
The best benefit is it increases plant utilization of Nitrogen & Phosphorous from 30% to as high as 80% by inhibiting Nitrogen losses through ammonia volatilization and nitrate leaching, and preventing Phosphorous locked up in the soil. The chemical presence of Urea and Phosphate are stabilized in the soil retaining their availability for plant uptake for the entire cropping season.   It is not a farfetched possibility that all fertilizers may be coated with organic acids in the near future.

NU6

Hi Prof. Jorge,

Below is my NU6 idea.

Hydroponics with funnel shaped circular fish tank

My NU6 idea is a continuation of my previous keyhole garden which aims to help provide people fruits and vegetables for their consumption or even as a source of income right in their own backyard. This time, I am sharing hydroponics system which makes use of fish tank whose bottom part is shaped like a funnel. The fish tank can as small as six feet in diameter and made of plastic. It is supported by a metal frame which extends to the plant bed. The plant bed should also be made of plastic to make it lighter. Also, you need a small water pump, sand and pebbles, hydroponic vegetables (like tomatoes, eggplants, broccoli, lettuce etc) and fingerlings.
The shape of the funnel in the bottom part makes the fish tank self cleaning with the movements of the fishes that you put.  As the fishes circle around the tank, the dirt and wastes of the fishes goes down to the funnel which is then pumped out and sent to the plant bed on top of the top. Once the wastes are sent on the plant bed, the plants filter the water together with the sand and pebbles underneath the plants. Then the filtered water goes down thru a tube to the fish tank. This provides the fishes clean water without replacing the dirty water. Also, as the water falls down, it provides aeration for the fishes which is very vital for the fishes. To supplement oxygen, another pipe is installed that directly sends the water back to the tank which provides much needed oxygen for the fishes. With the ample amount of oxygen available, you can stock more fishes per cubic meter than the conventional fish ponds. With this, you can put commercial fishes like tilapia or the cream dory which are now very popular among restaurants. Given this idea, you can grow fishes for commercial purposes or for your family’s consumption. At the same time, you can make use of the wastes of the fishes as fertilizer to grow vegetables. Also, the system is less tedious since it is self cleaning and sustainable. It only requires a small amount of space and can be put up in our own backyard.

NU6 - by Bong Canlas AGSB Clark Entrep Disul - Herbal Medicine

Sir, good evening.  Here is my 3rd NU6.  Thanks.  - Bong Canlas

DISUL: HERBAL MEDICINE
By: Jose Tiburcio S. Canlas
People, especially the poor, find it difficult to cope with the constantly increasing prices of medicines.  For some who cannot afford, they opt not to buy the needed medicines which result to unattended ailments.  With this reality, the use of herbal and alternative modes of therapy provides a new ray of hope to cut cost on someone's expenses.
My mother who is an advocate of herbal medicines has a plant that is called locally as "disul".  The plant is easy to grow and needs minimal maintenance.  For the past years I have witnessed how it healed some common ailments like:
1. Foreign bodies on fingers ( splinters ) that are not easily extracted by needles.
2. Folliculitis ( pimples ) and boils ("pigsa" ) where the inflammatory process is hastened that leads to the rupture of the formed abscess.   The opened wound then would have faster healing process.
3. Open infected wounds also benefit from this herbal plant where the abscess formation is minimised if not eliminated fast.3
4. Punctured wounds from nails and pointed objects also benefit from the plant by shortening the inflammatory process.
The procedure in using the "disul" plant is by pounding the leaf and applying the leaf with its extract as a poultice and wrapped to the affected area.
Special thanks to Dr. Edu Tuazon for helping me out in the use of medical terms for this article.

NU 6 6 WikiPic App

Prof Jorge,

Please see my 6th NU assignment below.

NU 6 – 6: Wikipic App/Software
Internet is one of the most reliable solutions when you want to know something. There are a lots of search engines available to help you find what you are looking for. Some of the famous are Wikipedia, Yahoo, and Google, as what they usually say "If you do not know, Google it".
Usually when we search something in the internet to get the information we need, we just type the keywords in the search toolbar and all of the related data will appear. That's how it usually works. But there are times that I find it hard to search what I am looking for, especially when I do not know what it is called; all I know is what it looks like.
This has been my dilemma experience of many times already. For example, you saw a fruit, plant, or a flower, but you don't know its name, and you want to know it, then you will search it in the web, but before you will get the information you need, it will give you first a hard time to search for its name that sometimes pisses you off and you will end up ignoring the opportunity that you will learn.
With this, I have thought of the idea of a software application where in you may also be able to search the information using a photo of the particular and not by typing the keywords alone. It's like inserting the photo and clicking search in the toolbar. You may use your mobile phone to take pictures that you will use in searching for the information.
You may insert a photo of a person that you don't know for example, and if that particular person has data on the internet the help of the software application to detect it; it will give you the same facts of that when you search the name of the person but doesn't know what he looks like.
This option if added to the search engine or an application will be very helpful especially since We or I myself is very dependent in the internet. In every uncertainty, there is Google to help me. And in some things that I do not know what is called but I see it physically, now there is a Wikipic App/Software to help me more.

NU6 # 6 24HRS MEDICAL GROUP ASSISTANCE by Arlene A. Panganiban AGSB Clark

This concept is about the 24 hrs medical group assistance  I would like to see this in the Philippine setting. It has some derivatives from what i saw in US but totally different in the sense of procedure and culture. I have added so many other things that is only applicable to our Philippine setting. The goal of the program is to provide 24hrs continuous/ teachings/ information medical assistance to a certain group pf patients by a certain group of private doctors or community doctors employed in a hospital.

Lets focus on the middle/ lower income population to be able to help more Filipinos. Those that may seek medical consultations in provincial hospitals and or private doctors who charges below 400 pesos per visit.

The normal consultation process ( this process is also practiced in expensive hospitals and doctors ex. St Lukes and Medica City) is mostly to individual doctors who have no partners, and no group support. Or if patients go the government hospitals, it is to whoever is available in the ER or to a certain doctors who come on a special day of the week. The problems i have seen and encountered is that after the visit, if any questions or any problems like allergies to the medication arises, there are no way to contact the doctors, Most secretaries  will not contact the doctors unless the patients are personal friends. The patients are then referred to the ER where the doctors on duty doesn't know the history, asks questions from families who are not medically informed and thus the treatment/ consultations start again. Labs are usually repeated because doctors don't trust all laboratories and some medications are changed because doctors do have their preferences and their different experiences. Many questions and problem's need not to be brought to an ER setting, Instructions may have not been complete from the office/ or just information families forgot to mention, or just other symptoms that may come up and not relevant to the case are so common to a sick person who doesn't understand. No ER doctor will report or update another doctor regarding a patient unless they are in the same hospital / institution and who may use same patient charts or records.

My concept will prevent  an expensive and stressful ER experience that is not necessary, will educate and calm patients, and will give a chance for a continous medical assessment over the phone or the next day by the same doctor. The wholistic approach till illness resolves gives you a sense that the doctor is part of the family.

The concept is to groups doctors, preferably in their medical field of expertise. This doesnt' have to be always the case. Groupings can be with different fields too. This will provide a shared office and time slots, same secretaries and nurses for support and shared expenses like office equipments. The important is that there will be an on call doctor who can really sleep if the nurses are trained to answer questions after hours. The nurses can refer to the charts or records of what happened during the day/ and the written plan / diagnostics being ruled out by the same physician. Nurses can teach patients in simple words even over the phone what to do or things they dont need to worry about . Of course taking into consideration the knowledge of the nurses. And in times of not knowing what to do and say, the nurses have the option to call the doctor on duty for their expertise. There are so many ways for arrogant consultants not to be on duty , a lot of doctors moonlight in ERs and so they can do the same here.Nurses play a big role in educating and teaching patients that will prevent non compliance due to ignorance. Doctors are not so patient, are busy and tired and their time too is expensive. If there is a good system where doctors share patient informations and plan of care, nurses learn quickly by experience and from mine, i can honestly say that this is attainable .The doctor moonlighters( general practitioners) have no choice but to document on the same charts, report on the same doctors what / how his shift went. Follow up care and history will be no problem.
Another big aspect of care is teaching which the on duty nurse can expound to prevent worsening of the illness. Examples are for children who may have mild diarrhea and who don't need hospitalization, nurses may call them at home /or teach families if diarrhea exceeds 6 in the last 2 hrs to call the office for further plan. Nurses can teach what symptoms to look for if fever is already causing dehydration which families just let patients to sleep and rest.  Dehydration kills kids fast.Families in the process will learn and can apply the vital information too next time. And if hospitalization is necessary, the nurse can call information to the ER for better and accurate history. History is very important. There will be slow and busy nights for the on call personell but surely it is cheaper than the unnecessary hospitalization. Here in the Philippines,if there is a vacant room, mostly.patients not doctors decide to be hospitalized due to fear of what they don;t know how to handle at home. 3

This is in the line with patient care, but in line with business, as the business grow which it will because of the care provided, the same group can open its own drug store, its own laboratory and other allied services to provide their needs. The right service will bring in profit. Doctors are not usually good business managers, more so in a group like this. They should focus on their patient care and treatment. That is when we business graduates of Ateneo come in .

Thank you

Self timer App

In the fast food chain industry, SPEED of service plays a bigger part in order to keep the customers coming back. Of course, not to mention the great tasting food it has to offer. When you talk about service experience in any fast food restaurant, speed has always been the top of mind.

In the restaurant industry, which I belong to, one of the problems that contributed to the slowed down speed is when the cashiers are unmindful of the time they take the orders of the customers causing longer queuing time during order taking. It is tested that when the cashiers are being measured/check on their time standards of order taking and preparing the order of their customers, they are more conscious on it creating a faster transaction.

One solution that can be done to address the problem and at the same time, make the cashiers check and gauge their speed and provide a self help development for them in this area is to provide a self timer activation application on the respective point of sale units during order taking.

How it works? A TIMER APP will be installed in the system, which will then can be open on every corresponding cash register. During the order taking of cashiers to customer on queue, he/she will activate the timer to start the counting. Example, if the time standard is peg at 100 seconds, the timer will make a beep sound and pop a message on the time remaining left. The numbers counting will turn red on its 80th second prompting the cashier that she needs to finish the transaction in 20 seconds more.

With this App, cashiers will now be more mindful of their time standards and can improve the speed of service.

Note: Inspired from timer app found in Apple and Android 4

Agricultural Tv Channel in the Philippines (NU6-5 by Verman T. Reyes) AGSB Clark - entrep

Agricultural Tv Channel in the Philippines
NU6-5 by Verman T. Reyes

Poverty incidence in the Philippines mostly in remote areas are said to be farmers and fishefolks. Statistics say that 40% of the poor come from the agriculture and aquaculture industry. They are either uneducated or don't have the new skills to improve their craft.

In Thailand, the Thai king established and subsidizes a tv program solely on agriculture and aquaculture industry. The reason behind this is to always update thai farmers new farm practices and new agriculture programs of the government for the farmers.

Information is a powerful tool to make farmers be more efficient and also to promote farming is not just a lifestyle but a business. You can really make money on farming or fishing. In Thailand, thai farmers are rich, they drive toyota hilux, isuzu dmax and mitsubishi strada. Sometimes our poor farmers here don't even have a transportation vehicle but merely a motorbike. <those planting SL8 rice variety now do>

When will our poor farmers progress? They should be the one getting rich because they produce crops or food for our country. One solution is information dissemination. If we educate our farmers, they will improve their ways of farming in the old tradition by mixing with a new way of farming integrating modern technologies.

My solution is to establish an all agricultural tv channel in the Philippines. The government can jumpstart this project and eventually could sell this to private firms or make this a private/public project venture. Why the goverment?

1. They have at present own RPN 9 and PTV 4, which sometimes feature agricultural shows. They could spin-off one of this channels to the idea.
2. They have the financial capabilities. At present, government has a P60-P70 billion pesos budget on agricultural industry. If they could just alot about 1% of that budget about P600,000,000 to P700,000,000 to the operation of that channel.
3. Government has a lot of agricultural resources that could be source of programs to be featured like interview of scientist from UP Los Banos and Philrice. And feature successful farmers as testimonials.
4. The government has a wide network of organizations that are agricultural related that could serve as promotion to this idea. <or require telcos and radio stations to devote time, free sms on agrinnews:  price of commodities, weather;  they have this in Thailand>
Would this be feasible? Would it make money and be sustainable.

Yes, I believe that this project is feasible and could make a profit by creating good innovative tv programs and shows. If people get interested then they will always watch the tv programs and create more viewership which advertisers like. The more viewership, the more advertisers will place an ad to the tv channel.

How to create innovative tv program and shows related only to agriculture?

1. Also create subsidiary radio station, farmers wake up early in the morning to listen to the radio. They could create tv and radio programs combined.
2. Create a talk show about new farm practices and interview with successful scientist farmers.
3. Create cooking show by using food that could be grown in the farm and fresh. So that farmers realize that they could create delicious dishes grown direct from their farms.
4. Visit different farms and plantation to showcase the local farmers. This could create agri-tourism which could be a viable income for farmers.
5. Also this is a good way to promote international farming practices like of that in Japan farming.
6. This could be also a good platform to announce government updates regarding status of our agricultural industry and opportunities that farmers can venture.
7. That agriculture is not just a lifestyle but also a business. The tv program could entice new farmers especially the younger generations.

Recommendation

I think, it's a good time to create this tv program about agricultural because our economy and population is growing and we could entice corporation to sponsor or advertise in the tv channel.4

Lapel Microphone at Drive Thru Area

Drive Thru has evolved as an integral contributor in the total sales achievement of the fast food industry I am connected right now. With the changing lifestyle in terms of take home transactions, to which Drive thru is considered now as the new avenue in partaking of take home orders. Because customers are now always on the go and taking stop in an outlet just to buy food will still take a lot of time especially during peak periods of lunch and dinner were a lot of customers are lining up, taking the queue in the counter area.

In our system, our Drive thru dynamics consist of the following:

1.     Customer will drive thru and will place its orders at window 1 which will be taken by a cashier stationed in that specified area
2.     The order upon punching on the cash register, it will then appear on the kitchen monitor of the production area for preparation.
3.     After the transaction on window 1, whichincludes also the payment, the customer will then, proceed to window 2 for pick up of the orders. In this area, assembly of orders will be done and the assembler crew and the presenter crew will do presentation to the customers.

During this process, the normal and average acceptable speed is at two minutes fororders P200 and below. But common problem arises on this set up is that when the production crew failed to check from time to time the kitchen monitor system for any orders because of being busy preparing for other orders or doing other tasks such as refilling, cleaning etc.

My store, which was recently opened last 2010, we are achieving an average speed of 1minute and 40 seconds. Although it is within the normal acceptable standard, as we find ways in giving the best speed possible for our customers in order to create a notion that in our store, we serve our customers fast, a new idea has been instituted to further speed up transaction.

Here comes the advantage of using lapel microphone in the drive thru Window 1 area for the stationed cashier. Upon order taking of customer’s orders, the lapel microphone is being heard in the kitchen station that will prompt the production crew that there is orders placed at drive thru. For this simple initiative, or idea that has been made, it further speed up our transaction into an average of 75-85 seconds for orders below P200 because there is now an agitator that prompts everyone to assemble with precision and speed the orders called out at the Drive thru. It has also help the store bagged for three consecutive times as Drive thru Olympics winner for North Luzon trade area.  3
