Nu 12 #2 by Mark Tacbas Meds on Wheels

Meds on Wheels

Since every once in a while, people need medicine to go on with their everyday duties, and not everyone is ready when a sudden headache, stomach virus or flu attack- the reason why most pharmacies open 24 hours a day is to address this problem.

Everyone is on the rush that's why mobile business (business on wheels) is getting popular. From food trucks to salon on the go; half are stucked in the streets (traffic jam) and the other half doesn't want to risk the stress of traffic so they decide to stay in their home or office and wait for the traffic to subside- the target market for mobile businesses. Added benefits are: no monthly rent for physical store- less overhead cost and less marketing fee- free marketing when on- the road.

The dilemma of whether or not to leave the office/ home to buy medicine for a pain that hinder us from performing our duties well is what Meds on Wheels is trying to tackle. People don't need to leave their offices, homes and cars to buy medicine; Meds on Wheels will drive to you. When your tooth aches, you don't need to drive or walk to the nearest drug store; Meds on Wheels will do it for you.  3.5

NU 3 - Anna Mae Dela Cruz fewer choices, not more for FMCG

Good afternoon sir:)

Here's my NU paper for today (below).  I'm sorry it's a bit long!

Stay safe and dry!

New spending habits

I've decided I need to apply my approach to durable goods to the way I spend on fast-moving consumer goods (FMCGs).  With durable goods—laptops, cellphones, athletic equipment, etc—I am uncompromising.  Gadgets must have so-and-so RAM, storage space, megapixels, weight, etc, and none of the features I don't need and don't want to pay for.  Running shoes must be of a certain elevation, material not too thick, sole strong enough for a rough outdoor running track, etc, etc.  I guess I'm a bit anal but this is also a widespread and well-documented behavior; durable goods are studied purchases because their prices compel consumers to think twice, thrice, or make a long list of requirements then think things over a fourth time.  Not so with FMCGs and other cheap, daily-use products.  I'm more flexible with food, toiletries, and the like—and I blame a good portion of my spending and weight gain to that.

Today, for example, I absolutely had to have some junk food.  I had a clear and singular craving:  Chef Tony's popped corn chips in white cheddar.  But I wasn't willing to go all the way to the mall for one bag so I headed over to a nearby supermarket to hunt for the next best thing.  I decided I wanted potato chips and that, because my last encounter left me wanting more, I'd grab a can of Pringles.  I told mom I'd be back in 10 minutes, in time for lunch.

I got back an hour later.  First, there are 3 different sizes—the snack pack, a small can, and a large can.  A difference in the number of chips would've been an easy decision to make except I noticed that the small can also has a significantly smaller diameter than the large can, and a difference in the size of the chip does matter (to me).  Then I noticed that the small cans don't sport the same range of flavors and varieties that the large cans do.  The large cans have multigrain Pringles in a variety of flavors (Original, Farmhouse Cheddar, etc.) while the small ones only have the multigrain variety in one flavor (Classic).  Which leads to me to the issue on flavors:  Is Original different from Classic?  Is the flavoring on multigrain Farmhouse Cheddar different from that used on non-multigrain Cheddar Cheese?  My friends also recently noticed that Pringles is phasing out its salty orange Cheddar Cheese in favor of a milder yellow Cheddar Cheese (and that you'll never know if you got the orange Cheddar Cheese or the yellow Cheddar Cheese until you open the can).  That gives us a grand total of 3 different Cheddar flavors.  We haven't even talked about the other flavors yet—sour cream and barbecue of course, but also a range of non-traditional ones like pizza or dill pickle or (oh my god) what's the difference between the teal blue can of Seaweed Pringles and the identically-colored can of Salt & Seaweed Pringles?  I typically only get plain-flavored chips, so I figured I was safe from the burden of choice and will just go for a can of Pringles Light and be done with it.  But apparently they've phased out the Light variety and now have either reduced salt or reduced fat.  Has it occurred to them that the kind of consumer who'd want less salt would also probably want less fat???  So now I have to pick between a less salty but oily chip that will give me sore lips and a bloated belly or a salty but less oily chip that will lend me an extra pound.  What's more, each type of flavor and type of reduction was not uniformly available for different sizes and different varieties.  With 3 sizes, 2 varieties, 2 reductions, and at least 10 flavors, there are literally 60 possible combinations of preferences, only around 20 of which are available.  The consumer must figure out what he wants across all 3 categories then check whether the chosen trifecta is available in the first place.  It blew my mind.

By the end of it all I was so hungry I started eating my Pringles at the check-out counter.  Ten chips in, I wasn't happy.  I still want a bag of Chef Tony's popped corn chips in white cheddar.  So the lesson of the day is:  If it's not exactly what I wanted, I shouldn't buy it.  Sometimes, the best way to protect my wallet and my waistline is to let my OCD run wild.  And perhaps this is one reason why consumers today are becoming more and more particular with the products they buy, and therefore the cacophony of choices companies present them with.  But Steve Jobs was right:  Consumers don't want endless choices.  Macs all come in one color, in a maximum of 3 varieties each clearly suited for a different kind of user, and they are a hit.  As develop our own new products/services, a reflection on our own consumer behavior could lend us a valuable insight:  People don't want a thousand choices.  They want a few, simple ones that get it right—whether in love, life, or potato chips.  3

Professionalism – new work, methods, practices
Medical and Sales Representatives, Detail Man is it a professional job, or do you need to neither be functional nor be competitive?
Sales and marketing is a kind of job that requires great ideas, creativity and innovative thinking.  It is said that a great sales and marketing person produces his/her best output during high degree of pressure, that is why it is also said that sales and marketing is a good stepping stone for a career path.
But can we consider sales and marketing a career? Do they need to have functional and repetitive working environment? Is it necessary to have a competency for employee differentiation, will the numbers or quality/volume of sales will gauge the skills of a great sales person?
Being a medical sales representative (detail man) as they call it before requires a holistic skill competency for it caters different job aspects at certain degree of difficulty, now a days in order for a sales person to deliver sales he/she first needs to deliver the needs and wants of the client.  A skill that requires flexibility of character and focus in client profiling, here are some of my thoughts on how to be a successful sales person:
Customer Engage – great sales persons not only focus on clients, rather have commitment on delivering needs and wants, with engagement it separates the sales person and creates his/her differentiation among other sales person. Focus is different with engagement.
Business Analysis – it is said that if a soldier would go to war he/she must be knowledgeable of the battlefield and always prepared on what to do.  In sales and marketing, it is important to do a geographical strategy of the area, know the key opinion leaders, availability of distribution channels and know what problems needed for solutions.
Innovative – sales and marketing people always need to provide creative ideas, introduces and applies something new, useful and valuable to the company and its stakeholders most especially its customers.  There is a saying in marketing " Don't sell the steak, sell the sizzle" < Let us mention some of these Martin>
Act like an Entrepreneur – sales people must have mindsets of as if they own the company, they need to show integrity and sincerity for their jobs and produce better or outstanding performance sales outputs, sees opportunities, enhances results and consider setbacks as learning opportunities.
Leadership Skills – demonstrates ability to carry out company's vision to manage changes; leads, builds and motivates co workers/team mates to achieve objectives with integrity and proactivity.  This skill is the most important competency; it can inspire and influence colleagues for a sustainable and successful common goal.
Team Work – collaborates to achieve common objectives and encourages diversity of views and creates synergies among team members and across work units.  This can lead to better working environment both internal and external.
Communication – in sales, communication is the most important part.  Integrated communication is the best weapon a sales person must have, with proper endorsements and clear client – sales communication it will ensure that the information is passed on to others who need to be kept informed detailed and accurately.
Working in sales and marketing requires not only being functional, it requires skills of some extraordinary, a competency that separates the good from the best and the best from the excellent.  The job must be considered as a profession not just a stepping-stone for another career.

            PICK-UP DRIVE-THRU
Workday mornings, people usually are in a hurry; from taking a bath, to choosing their clothes, and eating breakfast (that most people chose not to), to avoid traffic jams and parking slot queues.  Well, breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day as it provides you energy to last through out the tough day.  Worst, even fast food drive-thru usually had long queues during the morning rush hour.  So, what if we can call in our orders even before we get to the drive-thru?  Less hassle, eh?  What you just have to do is pay for your order and pick it up.
Here's the thing; you're in a hurry, so eating breakfast will take much of your time as well.  You're anticipating long queue on the drive-thru; so you give your nearest drive-thru a call; give them your orders and your name, and the estimated time of your arrival (to keep your food fresh); when you reached your fast food drive-thru, just tell them your name, pay your bill, pick up your food, and leave.  Voila!  Less waiting time; and even if there's a queue, customers are attended to in a just a few minutes since they'll just be picking up their orders too and pay their bills.
Another idea; payment may be done through a credit card or an online payment system (like Pay Pal).  This time, order will be made online (most people surf the internet when stuck in traffic).  A separate booth will then be provided for both concepts, not to mix the "walk-in" drive-thru customers from those who phoned their orders.
These may be a bit time-saving, yet there could be cost increase for additional booths.  Security (especially for credit card transactions) can also be an issue.  However, convenience here is better than spending more time waiting than an ordinary drive-thru. 3

NU 12# 3: Product Improvement- Run time counter on Dehumidifier

Improvements on Dehumidifier: Runtime Counter
By Gio Mendoza

We have been manufacturing Dehumidifiers ( or Air Dryer) as a flagship product since 1964. As part of total customer satisfaction and maximizing equipment life, we also have to provide after sales service, maintenance and service technical support even after the one year warranty lapses. The wear and tear of the equipment depends on how long it is operated which does not necessarily coincide with the period of time from when it was purchased. Just like our cars, it could be three years since we bought it but we have not reached 70,000 KMS of usage. Similar to our cars, a runtime counter would be useful as improvement to our product. The runtime counter will be counting the running hours of the equipment whenever the power is switched on until it is switched off. This will help our technical support personnel, maintenance and service teams to better forecast the next spare parts requirement of our customers by knowing their rate of usage. We can also manage spare parts stock and inventory better with it. It will also aid us in our failure analysis, whenever there is a major equipment breakdown, as we can record at what particular period in the life of the equipment the problem occurred and what parts gets broken. This runtime counter can also be partnered with a software which we can develop and install in our current controls or as an upgrade which allows the control panel to connect to a network or online via LAN. This partner software can enable us to monitor the period of operation and usage of our equipment and we would not need to call or visit the customer to get the info. With such software, we can also alert our customers about any required replacement of parts ahead of time which will also allow them to budget for it and plan the next servicing schedule on the equipment. 3.5

NU12#4What pisses you off at AGSB? What must be done? ZHAO YANAN
I am a foreign student in AGSB; I stay in Philippines more than two years, for the foreigner we need the student visa to study at school. I can understand this is rule we must to obey. We must renew it every half year; otherwise we will be pay penalty and has bad record in the immigration. However, in our school, before we submit visa application form to immigration, we must have transcript of last term, every term, when we finish class, the professor need time to check assignment. So we always cannot get the grade immediately, finally our visa is pending.

Last year, my last day of class is end of November, I booked the Charismas holiday air ticket on December 23,but visa was expired at December 15,that meaning if I did not extension visa before December 15,I cannot go back china on time. I got my grade until December 7, also December is peak season of process visa, I only have two weeks to process, I am worried about I cannot go back and waste the ticket, so I almost go to immigration everyday to follow up, and got the visa last moment.
I hope  can consider foreigner student situation ,we only have charismas is long holiday .we want to extension visa on time , hopefully the professor can give us temporary grade first, so we can extension visa ,especially on December .   3

Power of 2000 suns - electricity and potable water from IBM research

Repost from Earthtechling | by Peter Danko

In a startling discovery, IBM Research based in Zurich Switzerland made a landmark discovery of harnessing 30% of the sun's energy while at the same time producing clean potable drinkable water (even salt water)

The system works this way:   the sun's energy is captured and focussed by parabolic reflectors where 30% of the sun's energy is converted into electricity.  This is a space age technology that uses triple junction pv cells. Then another 50% of the sun's energy is captured by heating water and purifying the same for consumption

Here is how it works:

NU12 Improvement on school Enrollment by Rachelle Roque

Hi Sir,

Here's my 3rd NU12 Topic: What pisses you off at the school? What must be done?

Every enrollment period, I can't help myself in getting annoyed with school system. The school website always goes down at the peak of enrollment day; maybe because of the large number of students accessing it. So I think it's time for the school  to upgrade their server or have a back-up one. Given that the school  know the number of old students & the list of students that passed the entrance exam, they can have an estimate of how many students will enroll and they should adjust & prepare the capacity of their server.

Another problem is that when the server went down in the morning, the students can't do anything but to wait. Although, there's an update in the FB page sometimes, there's no one for students to talk to yet because the school  office is still close and students have to wait until 12nn. We know that most students of school, if not all, are working and we can't just stay all day refreshing the website to check if it's already up. So, I suggest that school  should have a special office hour during the enrollment period; staff should also be available once the online enrollment opens at 8am. This is not only to give update when the server goes down, but also to immediately address students query & request in opening a subject. I think it would also be better if there's already pre-assigned subjects for every students. The student can just change it in case he/she doesn't like it, but at least there's an assurance that all student has an available subject for the term.

Next is on payment system. Even though school  allows online payment through some banks, students still need to go to the branch to enroll the account. I think it would be better for the students if school can make the online payment directly available in the online enrollment. school  can have a same system that used in purchasing products online. With this, students can just pay using credit card or debit card online and enrollment will be less hassled.

Additional improvement is to create a system that will notify students through email or SMS whenever there's an update on students school  account e.g. new grades, messages from the registrar. So that, students won't need to check it from time to time.  (Puede bang maging consultant ng registrar, or IT assistant)

            GROCERY CART with SCANNERS
Long queues are usual problems in supermarkets, especially during the Holiday Seasons.  Carts of groceries scanned one by one through a laser bar code reader, takes a lot of time.  So I came up with an idea.  How about integrating a scanner into the grocery cart?  Before you put an item into the cart, you can scan for its first; if you wanted to purchase it, just tap a few buttons to add that item to your virtual cart.  You can now see how much you'll be spending even before you go to the payment counters; that way, you can still return those items you deem not so necessary or out of your budget.  So now you're done shopping, time to pay up your items.  You just have to give your scanner to the cashier; the cashier will then display your total amount due, and then pay for it.  Every counter will now have a detector; this will check if you have items that were not scanned by your cart scanner.
This concept can shorten the queue in supermarkets, since each customer won't have to wait until the cashier finishes scanning each item one at a time.  It may be a little more high-tech that what we see in the industry today, yet there can still be savings in part of the business owner.  Since the scanner / counter detector thing can hasten the payment process, fewer payment counters will be needed.  Fewer employees will be needed also; the cashiers themselves can also be the bagger, so you won't need two employees per payment counter, thus cutting cost for your business.  It could also be your advantage against your competitors as you provide utmost convenience and less hassle and wasted time. 3.5  (dapat well guarded ang shopping carts)

NU 12 -WHAT PISSES YOU OFF AT THE NEIGHBORHOOD? WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST?

WHAT PISSES YOU OFF AT THE NEIGHBORHOOD? WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST?
I live with my family in our house. We lived in a condominium along Retiro in Quezon City. It is a twelve floors condominium with an elevator secured by five rotating guards and a segregated parking lot. We only rented a three-bedroom unit for almost thirteen years. It has a back up generator that is operating during brownouts. The parking lots provided by the building were only few that it cannot provide all the tenants. It also has a separate payment for the parking rentals. Since the built in parking lots in the building were just few the owner decided to buy an open lot nearby for additional parking.

Parking were really a major issue here in our vicinity since everybody wants a secured area for his or her cars. Some tenants have plenty of cars and would just rent only one parking area. Since the parking were so few and the tenants avoids additional expense for the parking lots, the tenants parked along the street of the condominium. The owner of the condominium also live in the condominium. He is aware of the situation. It is especially more tough these days because it always flooded. When it floods, we have to relocate our cars from the open lot parking area because the flood might reach our cars. During normal days we just park along the street. It is really frightening because it is unsecured. But due to parking situation we have no choice. There was a time that my side mirror was stolen because I parked in the street. It cost me a lot. What annoys me is that why don't the owner give a lower rate for the parking so that everybody can have a secured parking lot. Anyway the parking area is not fully occupied. He does not even perceived that some tenants would have more than one car. We almost live there thirteen years, I believed that we have a reason to request for a complimentary. The good business relationship should be maintained. 3

ENTREP # 2 NU12 - Mendejar What pisses you off at the school?

What pisses you off at the school What must be done?

I don't think I'll be the first one to say this but the school system  really pisses me off for this 1 reason.  Online enrollment and the instability of their system to support the huge amount of traffic of students.  Students trying to enroll for just 1 day, else the slots would either be filled immediately, leaving you either with either odd classes or an odd schedule, which, for people mixing school with work, is very inconvenient at times and if you enroll and unable to pay the same day, your slots get forfeited.  So why take more than an hour just to enroll? When your paying 12 thousand pesos per subject plus fees that should be able to cater all students enrolling at the same time? The reason is simple, the school  does not invest in its IT systems given that it would just be 3 days in a month where you would need a better performance or a better network to support your students. I believe they'd rather roll with it instead of putting in the appropriate resources with regard to money, manpower and IT infrastructure.

What can be done? Simple. Invest in your IT systems or revert to manual enrollment if you cannot promise a stable online enrollment system.  If I were a student, I'd rather go to school and enroll manually, first come first serve, old school style, instead of at home, clicking refresh until the systems are up which based on the last enrollment, took almost half a day.  Just looking at it, opportunity cost comes in play, instead of people focusing on what they can be productive with with half their day whether it be work or business or personal, they spent it just waiting online for enrollment.  So give them an alternative, enrolling manually.  This would be much cheaper than investing in IT infrastructure but would give you better results, you can even set up a hotline where students can call and enroll their subjects.  You just need to boost your manpower for 3 days in a year.  Ateneo as a school is a brand in itself, and to be honest, enrollment is a pain point for students which by wor of mouth can easily sway students who wish to enter MBA.  So its either you fix/upgrade the system, or give students an alternative.

Paolo Bellosillo's NU12 # 1 - How to Improve Employee Performance

Paolo Bellosillo's NU12 # 1 - How to Improve Employee Performance
Employees are the most vital asset of any company. That's why they are called Human Resources, because like any other resources, employees needed for the company to operate and succeed. It is without doubt that employees is the most important resource of companies because they are the brains and muscles of the entire company. These brains are gifts from God and it can be used to your advantage if you know how to do it.
1. Befriend. Make friends with your employees. If you are connected to them on a personal level, it is more likely that you will be connected on a professional level. It is said that how employees act at home is reflected in how they act in the office. Making connection with your employees is like bridging the gap between you and the employee, and they will be able to pen up to you any thought that he/she has. Befriending an employee opens the door to cooperation, and will surely lead your organization to success.
2. Work Environment. Giving employees the good and right working environment is essential. Their environment, where they work, how soft their seats are, how big their computer monitors are, how air-conditioned the office is, affects the employees work attitudes and habits. Giving them the best working environment is important to them. Work environment must also be cleaned, properly maintained, and pleasing to their eyes. Other than that, the work environment must also be strategic in a way where the flow of their work is smooth. The location of the departments, the offices, the photocopy machine, the pantry, is essential. By giving them the best work environment, they will be able to bring out the best in them.
3. Inspire. Inspiring your employees is the best way to capture not just their minds but their hearts as well. By setting good example to your employees, they will be inspired by you and more likely do the same. It is wrong to assume that as your rank goes up to management level, you are more allowed to be late. It's the other way around. As you assume higher position in a company, the more you must not be late. More so if you are one of the owners of the company. Inspiring your employees brings out the best in them and they will be giving their best for you without you having to instruct them to.
4. Well Being. For the employees, work is not their life. Their life is at home, and work is just a way to improve their lives. Providing them proper well-being is necessary for the improvement of their performance. Giving them benefits such as exercises and time off is crucial. Extra-curricular activities such as sports fests and outings are also vital to the improvement of their performance. Good well-being means good performance.
5. Care. Show your employees that you care for them. Show them that profits for you are not top priority, and caring for your most vital assets is the priority. Care for them, and for sure they will care for their work.
Improving the performance of employees takes more than just the technical aspects of the job. It's also about the non-job activities that you do to motivate them to improve their performance. It only takes determination and focus to achieve your goals.  3  <I like your persistence and spirit.  Keep this up Paolo>

NU12 #3 Metro Manila Waterways Transport System

Metro Manila Waterways Transport System: Anyone?
By Ed Vargas
Traffic in Metro Manila has been a perennial problem and will continue to be a worsening problem in the years to come.  Metro Manila is growing fast in terms of population growth and economic growth.  As Metro Manila continue to become a highly urbanized area and the sprouting sub-urban areas around its environs will continue to attract more people to settle here or do business here. The demand for transport is a function of economic growth and population growth and so the number of vehicles that will use the roadways. However, it appears that the existing road network of Metro Manila is not enough to accommodate the volume of vehicles and assuming government is adding new road networks, it is outpaced by the faster growth of road users. Even the MRT and LRT network who are supposed to provide mass transportation for the burgeoning population of the metropolis is insufficient. The result is heavy traffic everywhere.
According to a study conducted by a Japanese agency, the Philippines is losing about P 2.4 billion per day in terms of forgone productivity and income due to heavy traffic. Multiply that by 365 day you a P 876 billion annually which is about a third of our national budget. That's a lot of money which could have been channeled to providing basic services the citizen or could have been used to alleviate poverty.

The government, in particular the MMDA have tried to solve the traffic problems with its strategy of vehicle reduction program. We have the number coding which prohibits a vehicle owner to go out once a week. However, the "can affords" simply bought another car with another ending plate number to circumvent the ordinance. The aggressive marketing of car manufacturers and dealers didn't help either as purchasing a car has now become more affordable and easy. Recently, MMDA's plan to implement number coding that will stop you from using your car twice a week drew a lot of flak. Lately, they have barred provincial buses from entering Metro Manila to reduce the volume of buses plying Metro Manila roads but this has inconvenienced a lot of commuting public and was criticized for benefitting only the private vehicle owners.
The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) is considering going "underground" to solve Metro Manila's traffic problems. According to Transportation and Communications Secretary Joseph Abaya, the government has been considering a subway system in the metropolis as an alternative to congested roads and elevated light railway lines. The idea was floated by past administrations but it stumbled on viability issues. Assuming, the plan becomes viable, I can't imagine the horrendous traffic it will create once construction begins. I would say that this proposal would get us to a situation of "hell before heaven".

While the efforts of MMDA are laudable, it appears that they are not enough.  Planned infrastructure to increase roadway networks are disruptive and will take time.
If we lack roadways now, has anybody thought of exploiting our waterways for transportation purposes?
The Metro Manila Waterways
Metro Manila is located in the hydraulically complex Pasig River—Laguna de Bay—Manila Bay watershed, which includes more than thirty tributaries within the urban area. The main waterways consisting of the major channels are the following:
Tullahan River where the mouth is at Navotas, pass through the northern part of Quezon City, Valenzuela, Novaliches and  Malabon. Marikina River, flows through Marikina, Cainta, Montalban, San Mateo and Antipolo as well as some parts of Quezon City leading to Pasig River. Pasig River flows directly to Laguna De Bay and Marikina River, and also QC, Makati, Mandaluyong, Manila and San Juan (including San Juan River) on to Manila Bay. San Juan River flows water from Quezon City (like Tandang Sora and as far as Sauyo/Fairview/, San Juan and Manila leading to Pasig River.

Navotas River flows water from Navotas, Caloocan and Manila, intersects with Tullahan River at the middle on to Manila Bay (southern end) and to Tangos River (northern end). Angat River which drains water from Angat Dam pass through Norzagaray and other Bulacan areas. Its mouth is at Hagonoy, Bulacan and flows water directly to Manila Bay.
Marilao River (major channel) from Marilao, Meycuayan and as far as the northwestern side of the La Mesa Dam area.  Two other rivers, the Meycuayan River and Polo River that drains Malabon and Valenzuela dump their water here.  Other great rivers, the Santa Maria River and Balagtas River meet up with the Marilao River in the Obando area before reaching Manila Bay.

Paranaque River another major channel drains Paranaque, Pasay and Manila areas and dumps water directly into Manila Bay. Las Pinas River (major channel) drains water from Las Pinas and dumps water into Manila Bay directly. Pateros River drains water from Makati area (Guadalupe, Fort Bonifacio) and Pateros dumps most of its water into Laguna De Bay via Laguna River at its southeastern tip. It dumps some of its water into Pasig River in Guadalupe. Zapote River drains water from Las Pinas and parts of Bacoor Cavite and dumps water into Manila Bay directly. Laguna River drains water from Makati, Pateros and Taguig and dumps water into Laguna De Bay. Sucat River drains water from Paranaque and Muntinlupa and dumps water into Laguna De Bay. Paranaque River drains Paranaque, Pasay and Manila areas and dumps water directly into Manila Bay.
Canal dela Reyna River flows water from Manila as far as Tayuman, Claro M. Recto, and Binondo on to
Pasig River at its southern tip and flows water to Manila Bay via Estero De Vitas in its northern tip. Estero de Tripa de Gallina flow through Manila (Paco, San Andres), Makati as far as Fobres Park and Fort Bonifacio and then through Buendia Ave in Makati and Pasay City (including Bangkal and Don Bosco Makati) and then in Paranaque and goes to Manila Bay via the Paranaque River at the intersection near western side of the NAIA runway.

The rest are small rivers and creeks connected to these major channels such as Maytunas Creek in  Mandaluyong and San Juan, Polo River in Malabon, Valenzuela and Bulacan, Tanza River connects with Dampalit River and Tangos River which connects to Manila Bay. We have Batasan River which connects to Tanza River which leads to Manila Bay via Tangos River, Muzon River connects to Manila Bay via the entrance of Marilao River in Bulacan, Meycuayan River connects to Manila Bay via Marilao River. Estero de Maypad connects to Navotas River, Estero De Vitas in Tayuman) connects directly to Manila Bay, Estero Sunog Apog to Manila Bay via Estero De Vitas, Estero de Paco leads to Pasig River, Pasong Diablo River into Laguna De Bay, Alabang River from Alabang (up to Ayala Alabang Village and Festival Mall) into Laguna De Bay via Pasong Diablo River, Bayanan Creek in Alabang into Laguna De Bay, Poblacion River ,Magdaong River and Tunasan River from Alabang  all into Laguna De Bay.

I proposed the development of transport system in the main waterways of Metro Manila with its complex network of major rivers and tributaries providing an alternative and relieving the existing roadways that can no longer accommodate the increasing volume of land transportation.
A major component of the Metro Manila Water Transport System would be big ports in main waterways where roll-on, roll-off boats (RORO) would carry both commuting passengers and big trucks carrying products from the North and South Harbor to their destination elsewhere in Metro Manila. This way you eliminate these big trucks from plying around major roads in the metro like EDSA and there will be no need for truck ban.
Second component would be mini ports along the main water ways that can service purely passenger boats to transport students and workers to and from their schools and place of work in Manila, Quezon City, Makati, San Juan, Mandaluyong and Taguig.
A third component would be micro ports along the small rivers and esteros for small motor to transport commuting passengers to and from shorter destinations in the smaller municipalities down to the barangay level.
As a pre-requisite for the development of this water transport system to allow big boats and improve water flow would be the massive "cleaning up" (declogging/bank improvement/ dredging/ relocation of illegal settlers / and removal of all illegal structure) like San Juan River, Canal dela Reyna River and Estero de Tripa de Gallina. Needed are dikes or bank improvement, removal of obstructions and relocation of shanties. 3.5 (dapat palitan mo si Francis T)
The Benefits
If the proposed water transport system could relieve Metro Manila roadways of at least 30% of motor vehicles and commuting passengers currently squeezed in the existing road network and in MRT/LRT that would solve the problematic traffic situation in Metro Manila. The project will also revive the industry of water transport system from shipbuilding, maritime services and a lot of other commercial business could be established around major ports. The project doesn't solve the traffic and shortage of transportation but generates employment as well; from small banca operator, to stevedores, to seamen to ship captains and so forth and so on.
Another immediate benefit as a result of the "clean-up" would be the solution to Metro Manila flooding. Large volume of waters brought by torrential rains will flow unimpeded with the river system free of obstructions, widened and dredged.
I believe this project will pay for itself with the improvement in traffic situation reducing if not eliminating the 2.4 billion per day of forgone opportunity and productivity as a result of heavy traffic. The opportunities from economic activities as result of the water transport industry will generate income to the local communities, the local government and finally contributing to the national coffers.

Paolo Bellosillo's NU12 # 3 - Water Efficient Houses
Water is the most vital element for human beings. Without water, life on earth will not have survived nor flourished for thousands of years. Water is life.
But what are we doing now with water? We are wasting it. We are simply throwing it away. We take water for granted. People consume water as if it is "bottomless". It is not!
In residential houses, water is also very important and also widely used. We use it for gardening, cleaning the dishes, washing our body, cleaning our cars, drinking, and many others. In fact, we also use water to build the very foundation and concrete structure of our house. A house will not be livable if water is not available.
Since water is so precious and we have no choice but to consume it, what do we do? We can't stop using water since we need it, so what do we do to preserve it? The answer is not water consumption but Water Efficiency. It is using water the best, most economical, and most efficient way possible.
The Philippines is a rainy country, and we have to take advantage of this. Why not we harness rain water that falls on the roof of our houses and use it for non-potable water uses such as for flushing of toilets and for gardening. This is being used in high-rise buildings where they collect rain water, store it in a water tank, and distributes these rain water for flushing of toilets and fore gardening purposes. We can implement this system also in our houses.
The concept is we collect rain water that falls on the roof of our house, brings it down into downspouts and stores it into a water tank. Filter is also necessary to filter the unnecessary debris in the water. A pump is used to pump it up for flushing our toilets and for gardening. We don't need clean and potable water to flush our toilets and water our garden don't we?
By using and harnessing rain water that is so abundant in our country for our non-potable water uses in our houses, we will be able to save water, save the earth, and save the lives of future generations. 3

NU12 # 3 – ARIBA PROCUREMENT SOLUTIONS
by Anthony G. Parungao
SPentrep S10
As a general contractor,  one of the obstacles that will always be encountered are difficulties in engaging into bidding whenever we are invited for a particular project in private companies.  The manner the facilitation of bids are conducted are patterned against the way government bids are done.   The integrity of the bidding is always somehow questionable since the manner of selection is done subjectively or depending on the personal preference/relation of the facilitator with the contractors.  This is one way of getting small to big favors from the contractors depending on the project  that will be awarded to the winning bidder.

Most government and private corporations still conduct bidding in this old fashioned way which is prone to fixed bidding.   There is no strict internal control that will ensure a clean and honest bidding.

After so many years of manual facilitation of bids, Bank of the Philippine Islands introduced a new procurement software – ARIBA  e-Tender Reverse Auction.  The software is so effective that it eliminated some basic leg works such as:

  1. Securing bid plans from their Makati head office – plans are now digitally attached in the electronic invitation for free, this saves you transportation expenses.
  2. No need to attend the pre-bid conference – this also saves you transportation expenses and meal expenses that you have to incur after the meeting wherein you treat employees for a snack.
  3. Optional choice to visit actual site before actual auction/bidding process – another substantial savings on transport and food allowance.
Invitation to bid is sent via e-mail to all accredited and pre-qualified contractors/bidders one week before the actual auction, this will provide them enough time to accept or decline invitation.  If number of bidders falls within minimum, day and time of auction BPI administrator will send via e-mail confirmation of the scheduled day & time of the auction.
On the exact day and time of the scheduled auction/bidding, bidders will be given one hour to fill-out specific line items of the bidding documents that will comprise the total amount of the bid.  After entering per trade bid (General reqts, Civil works, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, etc.) a total amount will register and a ranking (1,2,3,4 etc) will appear on your screen to determine if your bid is competitive.  The advantage of the electronic bidding process is while you do not see the bids of the competitors, you are given a hint and a chance to change your bids in the span of 1 hour until you finally give up on your lowest bid.

The ARIBA Procurement Solution is a fast and efficient way to conduct public or private bidding without compromising the integrity of the process.  This is a fair and honest process that should be done by other companies who engages in procurement and bidding.  Technology is available, its just a matter of integrating the system in their respective workplace.

thanks Is this your idea or that of BPI?

NU12 # 4 – What pisses you off at the school? What must be done? – Observe Silence in the Library
by Anthony G. Parungao
SPentrep S1

I always make it a point to come early in school before my 3pm Saturday Strama class.  I go directly to AGSB library to study, read or do just about anything productive.  But what I observe since I started my MBA is that students could not refrain from chatting with their classmates to an audible level that they reach a point of distracting other students who would like to concentrate on their tasks.
It is common knowledge to everybody that silence should be strictly observed inside the library.  It is also clear and with written notice that food and drinks are not allowed inside the study area.  MBA students are educated professionals and should exude matured and considerate behavior.
I don't know if the library staff are suffering on deaf ears or are they just too busy reading and minding their own business.  They should call the attention of the nuisance students and even drag them out if they persist.  The library was designed with an atrium (central open garden) easily accessible from two sides where you can get out in case there are mobile phone calls or discussions you like to do with your classmates.  Or better yet, there is an open study area at the second level where you can freely discuss without distracting anybody.
Students should learn to refrain from talking/discussing inside the library and should be strictly enforced by AGSB library staff whose responsibility is to maintain silence and solitude.   The AGSB library staff should be vigilant and should exercise their full authority to maintain silence.  Library fee is Php 1,398.65 per trimester and is paid mandatory.  I want to maximize the facilities that I paid for but I think it's about time they do something about the noise.  3

NU12 #3: Metric based government PI - by Ermel Retuta

NU12 # 3  - Metric Based Government

A Metric-based Government
We are now on the era where everyone is thriving to cut cost and increase efficiency through taking advantage and exploiting today's technology. While there are many things that can be improved and automated, most still lies on the old brick and mortar approach in doing businesses and transactions.
It took me two days to finish a business transaction with Social Security System (SSS). Long lines on queue, manual process of writing and documenting, different counters or stations for a single task, staff that are chatting, are just some of the things that I observed that caused me a delay of two days before I complete my transaction with the said agency.
I'm not comfortable to see that while we see improvement on the majority of private businesses in the metro, like automation, computerization and online transactions, our government offices still lag behind.

Inside the offices are tables with a pile of papers and documents on top, and this is just a common sight. Where are the computers? Aren't they classified as income generating institutions?
I would recommend that all government agencies especially those that are providing service employ a metric based system in fulfilling its task. They need to analyze and study their overall performance not only on their financial targets but also on how they render or deliver their services. If one would compare how they are five years ago and where they are now, it would seem that nothing changes.
I'm not sure if there's someone from the group analyzing or even measuring the kind of service they are providing. If there is, then what are they doing as they see the challenges?
We need to employ a system where everything and everyone is measured by output and customer satisfaction. A metric-based system should improve service and enhance performance and productivity among its employees. This should lessen customer frustration and have a positive impact on how the people see the government.

This is easy said than done as most organization are resistant to change including government offices. This would involve leadership intervention and a will to implement the changes.
I'm looking forward for a better Philippines starting with the quality of service our government is providing. 3

Rio-Antirrion bridge crossing the Gulf of Corinth - the longest cable stayed bridge

Angono, Rizal  PHL  September 21, 2013 (Martial Law Anniversary)

Repost from Wikipedia on Rio-Antirrio bridge

I was watching this feature on the bridge construction - Mega structure of national geographic.  The bridge is the longest cable stayed bridge in world measuring 2.880 meters or 1.880 miles.  The bridge dramatically improves the access with Peloponnese which could be accessed by ferry at the narrowest point (Isthmus of Corinth) a 45 minute travel or via  long road travel to the east.  Its official name is Charilaos Trikoppis bridge named after the 19th century Greek Prime Minister.

It was built at a cost of 630 million Euros within budget and within schedule.

The bridge construction was led French Vinci group

Its construction was constructed a marvel because it was built at fault area, and too deep water (60 meters)

Compare this with the US Bay bridge which took decades to complete (too much delays) and at huge cost overrun

NU 12: What pisses you off at the school? What must be done? - valet parking

JANNSSEN REICHMAN ONG
NU 12: What pisses you off at the school? What must be done?

In my first day to school at it shocked me in the aspect of parking lot.  When I am entering the parking lot the guard halts me because I don't have the parking lot sticker. I said I am a student and even showed my ID as a proof. He told still I am not allowed because I don't have the sticker. So rushing to meet the class I had no choice but to park at the Rockwell parking lot, which will need a walk to go to the school  campus. After my class I went  to the registrar to get a sticker. They were able to give me after presenting my official receipt and certificate of registration of my car, which I need to get from the Rockwell parking lot and return to the  campus which I hoped that they have told me in the enrollment so that I was able to prepare and not go back and forth just for the documents. I was so happy that I already have the sticker and that next week I can park already. And the next day I was able to enter the parking of of AGSB and to my surprise that there another booth that you need to pay and I even provided my ID and argue to pay I was remember that you can get the sticker for free but still thinking why should I need to pay for I am already a student there. I was wondering why should there be a payment for this. I am student paying for the tuition fees anyway. But then I realized maybe there should be a payment for the maintenance of the parking area assuming that of course they did not include in the tuition fees because not everybody has a car in going to school. I consider the rationale behind. The next school day I was halt again I thought there was something wrong again but the guard told me there were no more parking available that I need to park again at Rockwell parking lot I told him alright anyway I will wait. And then he told me that it is not allowed to wait and line up in the parking lot so it really stress me because I have to park at Rockwell again and during this time the Rockwell parking rates is in a per hour basis which would surely give me a higher payment because it is still early. This scenario really bothers me. I just wonder why not the school  provide a free valet parking instead? Since it is not the students fault if there were no parking lot available and consider that the student pays a fee for the parking lot and that if he park at Rockwell a higher charge should be paid because of the differences in the rate. I am sure that a valet service would greatly ease the result of limited parking lot available. The guard on duty does nothing at all in the parking area they just roam around. Why doesn't the school  train the guards in driving skills so that they can provide a solution for the limited parking available? 3
