Paolo Bellosillo's NU12 # 3 - Water Efficient Houses
Water is the most vital element for human beings. Without water, life on earth will not have survived nor flourished for thousands of years. Water is life.
But what are we doing now with water? We are wasting it. We are simply throwing it away. We take water for granted. People consume water as if it is "bottomless". It is not!
In residential houses, water is also very important and also widely used. We use it for gardening, cleaning the dishes, washing our body, cleaning our cars, drinking, and many others. In fact, we also use water to build the very foundation and concrete structure of our house. A house will not be livable if water is not available.
Since water is so precious and we have no choice but to consume it, what do we do? We can't stop using water since we need it, so what do we do to preserve it? The answer is not water consumption but Water Efficiency. It is using water the best, most economical, and most efficient way possible.
The Philippines is a rainy country, and we have to take advantage of this. Why not we harness rain water that falls on the roof of our houses and use it for non-potable water uses such as for flushing of toilets and for gardening. This is being used in high-rise buildings where they collect rain water, store it in a water tank, and distributes these rain water for flushing of toilets and fore gardening purposes. We can implement this system also in our houses.
The concept is we collect rain water that falls on the roof of our house, brings it down into downspouts and stores it into a water tank. Filter is also necessary to filter the unnecessary debris in the water. A pump is used to pump it up for flushing our toilets and for gardening. We don't need clean and potable water to flush our toilets and water our garden don't we?
By using and harnessing rain water that is so abundant in our country for our non-potable water uses in our houses, we will be able to save water, save the earth, and save the lives of future generations. 3
