Heat stable vaccines

Currently, the requirement for a vaccine to be transported and stored in a constant cold chain, from the time it leaves the manufacturer until it is used at a vaccination point, places huge logistical challenges on vaccination providers who must ensure that the cold chain is maintained each step of the way. Although this is not a significant challenge in wealthy countries, it is a considerable obstacle in developing countries like the Philippines Logistical hurdles imposed by the need to keep vaccines between 2 and 8 degree Celsius could be eased if heat stable vaccines would be developed.

If more vaccines could be safely used outside of the cold chain for a period of time, particularly for the last stretch of their journey to people living in the most remote areas, we’d be able to reach far more children.

Needle-less injector

Many medications and vaccines are delivered via injections with needles. Fear of needles may affect vaccination coverage rates because some patients will not go to get the shot. Needlestick injuries also expose healthcare workers to up to 20 different blood borne pathogens including HIV and hepatitis B and/or C.

Needle-free injectors can expand immunization coverage by attracting those that normally forego shots due to fear/anxiety of needles. These will also the risks of needles including needlestick injuries, needle reuse, cross-contamination or spread of infectious disease and potentially reduce Health Care Costs.

Biodegradable implants

Despite the availability and use of a variety of contraceptive methods, unmet need for family planning remains high. Contraceptive implants are a highly effective, safe and long-acting family planning method. However, implants must be removed when pregnancy is desired or at the end of their duration of effectiveness. The need for the removal procedure can be problematic in resource-constrained settings because women may not have access to trained personnel or may not be able to afford the procedure. To overcome this problem, a biodegradable contraceptive implant that will help address these service delivery constraints and expand women’s contraceptive options will be of help.

Alzheimer’s pill

With the aging population, we now see more cases of senile dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s commonly occurs in those over the age of 65 manifesting as rapid deterioration of behavior, language skills and personality. Other symptoms include memory loss, confused thinking and difficulty with speech. It is progressive, meaning it worsens over time.

With no new treatments for Alzheimer’s licensed since 2002 we urgently need to capitalize on promising early science to make sure it’s progressed as quickly as possible towards clinical testing.

Vaccine for HIV

Today, more people living with HIV than ever before have access to life-saving treatment with antiretroviral therapy, which is good for their health and reduces the likelihood that they will transmit the virus to others if they adhere to their HIV medication. In addition, others who are at high risk for HIV infection have access to pre-exposure prophylaxis. Yet, unfortunately, incidence of HIV is still increasing including here in the Philippines.

To control and ultimately end HIV globally, we need a powerful array of HIV prevention tools that are widely accessible to all who would benefit from them. Vaccines historically have been the most effective means to prevent and even eradicate infectious diseases. They safely and cost-effectively prevent illness, disability, and death. Like smallpox and polio vaccines, a preventive HIV vaccine could help save millions of lives.

Genetically modified Dengue mosquitoes

Because there is currently no effective vaccine against dengue and no specific treatment for the disease, controlling and preventing dengue fever outbreaks are essential steps for keeping people healthy. The primary preventative measure to reduce dengue infections is the control of mosquito populations. Because the transmission of dengue requires mosquitoes as vectors, the spread of dengue can be limited by reducing mosquito populations.

In the absence of an effective vaccine that protects humans from dengue, limiting contact between people and vectors is the most effective way to prevent dengue infections. New genetic approaches could be considered as ways to control mosquito populations. Genetic engineering of the Aedes mosquitoes to disable them from spreading the virus could be explored.

Permeable cement

During monsoon season, flooding is almost always inevitable especially here in Metro Manila. Back then; this was not a problem since soil has the capacity to absorb water to a certain level. But now that most of the metro is paved, rainwater has nowhere to go. To add, most of our drainage systems are clogged.

A permeable concrete would be of use to allow surface water to freely drain through the wearing surface to the underlying ground with the ability to act as a reservoir during periods of high downfall. This can also help delay the discharge of surface water into water courses or drainage systems reducing the risk of overwhelming systems and causing flash flooding. While helping to prevent surface water flooding, the concrete could also help to make roads or cycle paths safer by preventing puddles that could pose a risk.

Blood glucose monitoring through Smartphone / watch

Consistent self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) has been shown to be a useful tool in improving glycemic control in type 2 diabetes.4 We now use smartphone applications to log blood glucose results and this can be easily reviewed by healthcare providers to make recommendations about exercise, diet, or medications. However, this will still entail the patients to use another machine to prick, and get the drop of blood be analyzed for the sugar level.

The smartphone / watch will have the ability to get the samples aside from logging and analyzing. This is convenient for diabetics especially the ones on the go since almost always, they have their gadgets with them. It could also be programmed to take samples at a specific time for more convenience.

Garden Café and Bakeshop

Fertilizer can be a big expense, but it doesn't have to be. Used coffee grounds and eggshells are free and provide much-needed nutrients to the soil. By using these items in the garden, not only are plants getting the nourishment they need, but these items will not be taking up space in a landfill. Storing coffee grounds and eggshells in a countertop composter, plastic container or plastic bag will prevent them from attracting bugs while you collect enough to use in the garden.

Bioplastics

Many of the products we see and use today are made of plastic. However, plastics don't mix well with nature and discarded plastics are a big cause of pollution. Public pressure to clean up has produced plastics that seem to be more environmentally friendly.

It would be good if plastics could break down more quickly solving the problem of cluttering and pollution. Also bioplastics could be compostable and they decay into natural materials that blend harmlessly with soil.

 Dear Sir Jorge,

Submitting a more detailed description/explanation as to why I came up with these ideas.

New Ideas 6/04/16 Addendum/Explanation
1.       Adsorbent recyclable foot pads
(Not everybody likes wearing socks, I some people use sanitary napkins place under their feet to absorb wetness and foot odor. Then again, sanitary napkins contribute to more trash so they must be recyclable/sun heat sanitized)

2.        Auto shut off 10 pm Videoke player
(Programmed to shut off every 10 pm to everybody's peace and quiet at night)

3.       Auto silent off key Videoke player.
(a more intelligent machine must be able to detect that to spare everyone from getting into trouble because not everybody can really keep a tone

4.       Invisible paint sensors that sound alerts
Paint that detects any attempt at axing trees for any logging activities, connected to servers from the DENR and military)

5.       Birth control pills/bait for cockroaches
(curbing their population in another way makes us rely on insect sprays that are harmful to our health)

6.       Rechargeable mosquito lamp zapper
(We need mosquito zappers that don't totally rely on electricity all the time specially during outdoor activities)

7.       Moon beam chargers aka low light chargers
(We rely on too much sun, the sun also comes down. Maybe a technology that harnesses low light like that from the moon would be totally cool)
8.       Integrated air purifiers in airplane air conditioning system
(to prevent diseases a lot of airborne diseases, many of which are a result of transmission due to global travel)

9.       Transdermal patch system for hypertension.
(I see a lot of stroke and non stroke patients who simply get to tired from taking too many medicines, some of which chew them or are crushed and delivered via NGT, there must be an alternative way to do it)

10.   Visceral fat specific emulsifying meds.
(Visceral fat is a culprit in cardiovascular diseases, a medicine that specifically targets it would do wonders in medical management.)
 Sincerely,

Francisco B. Ranada III

10 New Ideas

1.Unit dose candy partition bottles
It is a system where there is a ready to mix and ready to take medicine for both adults and children alike. The system is in collapsible bottles that can be put in the chiller. There is a partition between the medicine and the diluent/syrup with flavors. The only thing the mother will do is to squeeze the bottle so that the drug component and diluent will mix together and this will be the exact dose unlike what is done if the drug will be coming from one bottle. The bottles are light and handy that it can be stored almost anywhere.
Inspiration: It is always inconvenient to mothers to suspend and re-suspend solutions and suspensions for their children. Most of the time they will not be able to get the most accurate dose because some are left in the spoon or measuring cups. They can't also give the due doses when they are not around because their children can't take them on their own.
Target market: for mothers and kids

2.Heating clay
The heating clay is like an instant conductor of heat for food, feedings, milk and other stuffs. All the user should do is to stick and spread the clay over a small portion of the bottle or plate and let it emit its heat. The heat can be up to 35 degrees enough to heat the food or beverage. It can also be used in heating other items to disinfect them.
Inspiration: During rainy season and cool months of December to January, most people would like hot food and beverage. The containers could only last for some time. Milk bottles can't be reheated when outdoors using large sterilizers as well as Tube feeding for patients on nasogastric tubes. With the clay you don't have to bring the containers to and from the house to sterilize them.
Target market: Mothers, medical facility catering patients on tube feedings and young adults.

3.Weight and ergonomics monitoring office chair
The chair is specially made for those who spend a lot of time sitting. The features include an alarm systems that lets you know if you are getting any heavier or lighter depending on your setting. The chair also reminds you of the proper position during your work hours. It also gives signs if there is a need for you move a little bit. It also fit your contour and your body and neck is supported by gel-like pads so that there will be less stress while you work.
Inspiration: immobility is one of the causes of obesity to most workers and to add to this is the non- ergonomic way at the workplace. These two are the perineal problems of that needs to be addressed.
Target market: Working adults. Call center agents. Executives and all associates who stays most of the time in the office.

New Ideas in Entrepreneurship

1.    CARE    - Hospice CAre Equipment for REnt.

Hospice and Palliative Care is care for the terminally-ill which aims to provide comprehensive relief of symptoms using the skills of a mix of health disciplines, together with education and assistance for both patient and family so that they are able to maintain care in the place which best suits the patient's needs.

In the Philippines, putting our terminally-ill loved ones in a nursing home is uncommon rather we manage to care for our loved ones in our very own home which normally does not have the machines, hospital beds, medical equipment in order to give the needed care for them and such equipment will entail a lot of money too.  Thus the idea of renting it will be a way to cut down on expenses in hospice care. Instead of putting your money in buying all of those equipment which might only be used for some months or so the idea of renting it will be a better option.

2.    GRAB Pwheels  – grab a car customized for Persons with Disability (PWD)

Being in a family with a PWD (person with disability) brother is a big challenge and a responsibility as well. My eldest brother has polio and currently on crutches and braces.  I feel the pain and the limitation on his movement affecting his daily social life.  Although I can provide him a car the access needed for PWD needs is very much limited in the usual car design. As of now a customized car for PWD is not yet available.  The idea of GRAB Pwheels is an option to offer where a PWD Car can be accessed through GRAB apps and be there right in your doorstep plus the car will have a customized design suited for PWD needs.

3.    G-STRINGS – from the G strings of Mangyans of Mindoro, aim to provide delivery services like LBC  concept in the whole province of  Oriental Mindoro

It is a delivery service provider like any other delivery company but the difference will be its personnel which is mostly Mangyan Professionals of Oriental Mindoro.  The delivery System will cater the whole island of Oriental Mindoro from Calapan to Bulalacao. This will also serve as an avenue of giving job opportunities to the Mangyans aimed to remove discrimination in hiring marginalized groups.

4.    Christmas Tree/Christmas Decors Rental or Event Décor Rentals

Event Decorations more so putting up a Christmas tree entails a lot of money. The high price of the Christmas tree and the different decorations to be used to make it more attractive can drain your Christmas budget in exchange for a month of happiness. A big budget which you only store in the garage for the next 12 months hoping that it can still be used in the next Christmas season. Giving the shoppers the option of renting all these decors may sound more economical.

5.    SOLAR WALLS  - Solar Panels as House walls

Our society can't continue to work on oil, and with rising gas prices and more frequent power outages, solar energy seems to be the way to go. With the goal of keeping all electronics up and running no matter what the weather and grid status is the main reason why I become interested in solar panels. We usually see solar panels above the roof, as a double roofing of the house but not all roof are wide and the space may be limited in putting up solar panels so the idea of why not install it as house walls. Installing it as House Walls can be a more useful idea, this will not only resolve the space limitation if we use our roof but also using the panel as the house actual wall.

6.     EVENT MARKET - Themed Flea Market Organizer with a twist, the flea market will have different "themes" to be offered.

Flea markets are a multimillion peso business in the Philippines and organizing it entails a bigger opportunity.  We can see a lot of weekend flea markets nowadays which somehow look the same.  Why not offering it with a different themes every weekend to make the consumers and vendors as well to  become  more inquisitive of what it is to offer thereby increase its profit potential and long term growth opportunity.

7.     RENT-A - CAKE

They say a cake is the star of every occasion or event. The idea of rent-a-cake came into my mind as I experienced the tedious planning in buying or ordering a cake- from deciding on what theme, color, accessories, height, size, flavor etc. can really stress you out. Not to mention that the cake will only be viewed/ used for few minutes in most of the events. Thus, instead of buying so costly cakes especially on wedding day why not offer a cake for rent.  Cakes to be offered are not edible it will only have a part that is edible for cutting purposes in wedding celebration. The idea of renting not only lessen the tedious task in preparing for a cake but also lessen the costly price of the cake.

8.    Pets Holiday Inn – offering an Inn for your lovely pets while you are in vacation

Much as pet lovers wanted to bring along their pets in their vacation, some places do not allow pets.  Giving the pet lovers the option of not only putting their pets in cages the idea of giving them their own "holiday inn" place where their pets can feel like they too are in vacation galore. This will be a place complete with staff trained to handle pets, complete with board and lodging accommodations and foods for their pets stay likewise, several pet activities will be offered as part of the package for their pets during the stay.

9.    SENIORS CAMP –  resort type retirement home for Senior Citizens with offer of shares/ stocks  for all seniors

It is a retirement home for our elderly loved ones, a beach resort complete with amenities of a five star resort but designed with access for the needs of the elderly people. It will be a place where senior citizens can relax and socialize with other senior citizens.   An offer of shares/stocks will be used as a means of acquiring ownership and membership to the camp.

10.  DAILY'S AUTOMATED SARI-SARI STORE

An automated sari-sari store, operating 24 hours daily, that is more like an enormous dispensing machine than the traditional store.  Cutting on the labor costs and better inventory of supplies will be resolved with the idea of automation. Instead of hiring several staff to man the sari-sari store which entails labor issues as to wages and benefits, investing on automated machine could be a better idea and will give a twist on sari-sari store business.

1.    Hydrocolloidal antibiotic and anti-inflammatory dressing with an adhesive for sensitive skin.
Dermal fillers and botox treatments are among the top 3 most common aesthetic procedures being performed worldwide. (Clear skin MD, 2015) The trend is also not limited to the type of procedure but an important factor that most of aesthetic patients consider is the "downtime". Downtime is a term that provides the length of time from which a person will experience any unappealing sequalae of a procedure. For example, a patient that comes in for a dermal filler or botox treatment, both entailing tiny punctures from fine needles may have a 50% possibility of incurring bruises and inflammation after the procedure, however, these bruises and inflammation will spontaneously subside in 3 to 5 days, hence the downtime is 3 to 5 days. The current trend on patient demand is the desire to have minimally invasive procedures done, such as botox and fillers without any downtime, a feat that dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons must address. Hence having a post treatment dressing that is not in the form of a visible band-aid which not only provides protection to the puncture wound but at the same time administer an antibiotic and provide hemostasis will be a valuable tool for post procedure patient care.
A round transparent hydrocolloidal dressing with adhesive (suited for sensitive skin) would be a more attractive post procedure dressing than a typical band-aid as it would be barely noticeable due to it's size and transparent color. The size would not exceed 0.5x0.5cm, which would more than suffice in covering the entry point of needles. The dressing will serve as a temporary "plug" on the puncture sites, contributing to hemostasis, decreasing bruising and swelling after the procedure, decreasing downtime.          An added benefit incorporated into the hydrocolloidal dressing would be the administration of an antibiotic. A topical antibiotic cream and ointment prevents any adhesive from attaching to skin, hence if the antibiotic is already incorporated into the dressing, this dilemma will be addressed.
The overall benefit would be better post procedure patient care and higher satisfaction rate from patients. In line with the current demand of patients who desire aesthetic procedures without the downtime, the hydrocolloidal dressing can offer a better option, decreasing the probability of downtime.
There are already existing hydrocolloidal manufacturers worldwide, however most of these products that are readily available in local pharmacies are limited to major surgical wound care such as trauma, burn and ulcers. The products are large in size and thick, not ideal for post aesthetic procedure wound care. There are manufacturers of "invisible" hydrocolloidal dressing in Korea and China which approximates the size of what can be acceptable to dress aesthetic procedures, the cost is at least P0.05 per piece without the antibiotic.

2.    Fiber-less surgical sponge to reduce risk and probability of foreign body (fibers) being left behind in the operative field during surgery.
The most common post-operative complication that any surgeon can encounter is infection. Therefore all precautionary measures are taken before, during and after surgery to lessen the probability of this complication, typically with antibiotics and septic-aseptic technique. However, the materials from which sponges are made comprise of thin white fibers that has a tendency to fall apart. Any fiber that separates from the sponge which has already absorbed blood is sometimes difficult to notice and detect, hence there is a risk that these fibers may be left behind in the operative field during surgery which will later on be a cause of infection and delay wound healing.
The fiber-less surgical sponge would actually be a modified version of the sponge with the simple solution that the edges are folded inward and secured with either a hypoallergenic adhesive or mere suturing, so that no fiber edge will be exposed and prone to being detached.
The benefit of such a minor innovation will go a long way when it comes to preventing post surgical infection secondary to foreign body. A roll of surgical sponge which is the basic material costs PHP800-1,000 and can make at least 2,000 pcs. of 2x2 surgical sponges. Additional manufacturing expenses will be labor for the suturing of the folded ends and autoclaving the finished product for sterility.

NU 10 Ideas Summary by Rosalyn P. Donato

NU Innovation Background How the innovation will work Gains from Innovation Implemetation of Innovation
BIOACTIVATOR SEED The bulk of biodegradable trash in every household cannot be disposed of properly which makes every housekeeper poorly motivated to do backyard composting. The putrid smell coming from the biodegradeable trash is also a problem in every household. Bio activators added to biodegradable trash for faster composting are available but they come in liquid forms and usually not that readily available in the market. Maybe crystallizing it and form them into "seeds" for easy handling can make the product more user friendly. Bacteria culture (bio activator) infused in a "seed" which can be thrown in together with biodegradable household garbage to hasten decomposition.  As soon as the "seed" comes in contact with the biodegradables, it dissolves and releases the bacteria and decomposition starts. So by the time the biodegradables are dumped into the compost pit, they are halfway degraded, lessening foul odor and reducing bulk of the trash. The innovation shortens the biodegradation encouraging more people to get into the practice thereby easing clutter/ trash into mother earth. The bioactivator liquid can be transformed into a seed form by a chemist/scientist. This "seed" may come in a tablet or capsule form which can be packaged in a aluminium blister pack dispensed and can be readily used in any household biodegradable trash. Instructions should be given on the number of "seeds"to be used per amount of trash and expiration dates  for it to work.
TREE AS A GIFT  For very obvious reasons, the denuded forest and mountains contributed to the recent massive flooding not only of water but of mud in Central Luzon. It was clearly an environmental disaster causing loss of lives and massive destruction of properties largely due to the abuse of our natural resources. And if we do not act now, future disasters will be much more grave and will claim more lives and properties. Gift giving is one of the expressions on how we show we care or how we love another person. Material things are the usual tokens that we give to celebrants or to people whom we care for. And eventually, they all end up as garbage dumped into the earth, which eventually harms everyone. As an alternative choice, what could be more meaningful than "giving a tree" as a gift? Planting a tree in one's honor will be a wonderful gift not only to a loved one but to mother earth. It will benefit not only the gift receiver but more people and the future generations by doing so. A tree seedling will be bought as a "gift" from the organization that will do the tree planting. Each seedling comes with a certificate and a name tag same as the one which will be used as a tree marker, which will be enclosed in a beautiful card to be given as a proof of the gift. Written in the gift card is the information and story about the project and its location. It will bear the name of the gift receiver so that the latter will know that a tree will be planted in his/her honor. We need not explain further the benefits of planting more trees everywhere especially in the denuded mountains. They will produce more oxygen, reduce carbon footprint and prevent soil erosion. It protects from the degradation of our environment. When a tree seedling is bought from the organization, the schedule of the tree planting activity will be indicated in the card. It will be an event which can also be coincided with the local government's tourism office during festivals to draw more publicity. There will be an option for the gift receiver to go to the tree planting activity or not. If chooses not to, he can have the option to go to the location at his convenient time to check on his tree. The tree will have the marker bearing the name of the person honored. Each tree will be planted in a chosen denuded area which needs reforestation. This area will be contracted for tree planting. Locals can be hired to care for the planted trees until they become viable and grow with minimal maintenance. By giving regular employment to the locals, they will be discouraged from engaging into illegal logging and kaingin farming. Money derived from the sales can be used to buy or grow more seedlings, wages of the tree maintainer and sustain the operations.
CLINIC APPOINTMENT APP  Setting an appointment for a medical consultation is always a hassle and could be time consuming especially if one is trying to call the trunk line of the hospital. In this era of connectivity through the different media platforms, developing an appointment scheduler application will prove to be very convenient for both patients and doctors. Both can manage their time well thereby promoting efficiency in the delivery of service making both parties happy. A company will solicit the participation of the doctors who wish to be included in the data base of the app. Doctors should supply all the relevant data to their medical practice especially real time appointment schedule. Once an app is developed and offered free of service through the IOS and Android operating systems of the different gadgets, patients or relatives can access the online services of the different doctors enrolled in the application. Having an app in one's gadget will facilitate the setting of a medical appointment schedule to one's doctor through the fingertips so to speak. It may seem a small gesture but it gives convenience to both patients and doctors because time can be managed well for both of them. The app will feature the announcement of doctors' unavailability on certain dates due to conferences and other scheduled activities, thereby avoiding unnecessary travels by patients to the clinic saving time and money.  Additionally, the app will also be a marketing opportunity for doctors to create awareness of his medical practice. Efficiency in the delivery of service will be the most important benefit and it can in one way or another alleviate the suffering of the patients. Doctors will be encouraged to enroll in the database of a particular managing company that hosts the app with a minimal membership fee. Relevant information about the doctor especially the real time clinic appointment scheduler can be accessed through the app. The host server will link up the doctors' system to the app so that it will be real time. Initial information of the patient can already be filled up when setting the appointment online so that by the time the patient gets to the clinic, he/she is ready to be seen by the doctor minimizing waiting time. Overall, this system creates efficiency of service.
MOBILE PET GROOMING SERVICE  Pet related businesses have flourished in the last few decades as more and more Filipinos are spending for their beloved pets, especially dogs. Pet grooming services are usually in stand alone locations or are in commercial establishments in which pet owners should take time out to bring his/her pet. With the current traffic situations, this chore can oftentimes, be a hassle.  For those pet owners who are busy with work or other activities, a mobile pet grooming service will offer great convenience. A mobile van or truck much like a food truck equipped with grooming facilities and manned by skilled groomers will schedule visits to the different subdivisions/villages/barangays. The van will park in a designated space inside the village premises for easy access and homeowners/residents who have pets can just bring in their pets for grooming on scheduled days in their village. They don't need to go out of their villages because the groomers will come to them! Convenience of pet owners will be the biggest benefit from this mobile pet grooming service. Pet owners can avoid the hassle of traffic in bringing their pets to the groomers and will appreciate the time and effort saved. The mobile service can also offer other products related to pet ownership to the pet owners' doorsteps so to speak. A mobile van or truck equipped with water and drainage system manned by skilled pet groomers who will also drive the van to the appointed villages/barangays. The mobile pet groomers will coordinate with pet owners in advance for the schedule of grooming services in their respective areas. The schedule will be announced through email, text messages or announcement in all media platforms to create awareness. This will facilitate the scheduling of the grooming of the pets. The van will have a rotating schedule in the different areas every month in time for the grooming of pets. The mobile groomers may go on a second run in a particular area upon request.
"Pasa-Charge" USING A CELLPHONE CASE With a single gadget performing different functions, the smart phone has become indispensable and its performance will all depend on its battery life. How many times have we found ourselves in situations wherein our phone is " low batt " because we surfed and downloaded so much and then, we cannot make that important phone call?!! Worse, we brought our charger but no sockets nor USB ports that would allow us to charge.  The charged cellphone case can save the day! Now, not only load can be shared but the battery charge as well. A cellphone case that can charge when used in another phone of the same brand and/or configuration without the cords. In this way, charge can be " passed "on to someone whose phone is " low batt " . Faced with a situation when one's phone is  " low batt ", a friend or a person nearby who has the same phone or at least compatible with, can actually  "share" the charge just by using the latter's cell phone case to extend the battery life. The cell phone case will be designed as a charger that once a phone is detected to have low battery charge level it will automatically start charging. An industrial designer can develop a cell phone case that contains the charging mechanism that is light and thin enough. The case should be pre-charged like a power bank but does not have the cords but rather it has a special sensor that once it comes in contact with the corresponding terminal of the cell phone, it will start charging. In this way, charge can be shared by people using the same type of smart phones.
" EQUIPPED FOR EQUIPMENTS " (SPECIAL FUND FOR EQUIPMENTS)  Technology has many applications in every aspect of our lives more so, in the practice of medicine. Advancement of diagnostic and treatment options has improved the management of diseases and prolonged the life of patients. But the drawback is that because of the rapid changes in technology, usually a machine will be overtaken by a newer generation within three years time. Funding the maintenance/repair and upgrade of these machines and equipments of course, comes with a price, in which every health facility or clinic owner faces with much trepidation. Having a special fund earmarked for this purpose will help the health facility in programming its resources. Banks usually offer different products like special savings, time deposits, mutual funds, loans, etc that encourage clients to make deposits which the banks use to do business/investments in order to earn more. The abovementioned products have different interest rates, features and perks that encourage clients to avail. If they offer products for purposes of funding home renovation, buying a real property or school tuition; why not a special savings account that offers a special interest rate for a special accounts offered to individual doctors and/or health facilities for purposes of maintaining and/or having an upgrade of medical equipments and machines? Having special kind of "savings account" that offers a higher interest rate than the usual, where the clinic owner or health facility can deposit monthly until it reaches a prescribed period. The money saved is earmarked for maintenance/repair and/or for the upgrade the medical equipments. Even though the said saved fund does not reach the target amount to buy a machine, the health facility or clinic owner will be able to save some amount to ease up in the payment of future purchase of upgraded equipment. This kind of product makes it easier for the clinic owner/health facility organization to " force save " without noticing it. It will be much lighter in terms of managing the finances of the health facility for that particular period of time. The incentive to subscribe to this bank " product " will be the special interest rate. A free equipment repair insurance coverage rider can be an option for this fund on certain amount bracket. The special Savings Account is offered to a niche market of doctors/clinic owners and health care facility organizations. A monthly fixed deposit of choice, ranging from 5,000 pesos to hundreds of thousand pesos which will be debited from a mother/receivership account. This in turn will be deposited to an " Equipped for Equipments " Special Funds  Account. This special savings account will earn a special interest rate higher than ordinary savings account/time deposit. The higher the amount, the higher will be the interest rate. Features of the offer include three years of fixed amount monthly deposit to the special account. This is the lock in period wherein no withdrawal should be made in order to maintain the high interest rates. Should the depositor decided to withdraw the amount deposited, there will be a corresponding penalty computed that will be deducted upon withdrawal of the funds. Upon maturity of the funds on the third year, the funds will automatically be deposited back to the receivership account. The saved amount can be used to purchase upgraded medical equipments.
AUTO SHUT OFF CHARGER FOR GADGETS Cell phones and gadgets are every man's staples in this day and age. Because of the different functions done with one gadget, the battery drains up easily. And when the gadget goes into " low batt ", we tend to panic. Just to be sure, we're "100 percent" charged at the start of the day, we usually charge our phones/gadgets before bedtime at night and leave it plugged in the charger until the following day. Dangers of overcharging of the battery as well as fire caused by it are urban legends propagated in the internet. We do not know the real danger but just in case they are true, we try at least to unplug it before we sleep.  But most of the time, we tend to forget about it ,leaving them charging all night long while we might be sleeping with the "enemy." Designing the battery charger of a cellphone or electronic gadget with automatic shut off as soon all full charge is achieved without draining back the battery can be an innovation.  This kind of cell phone/gadget electronic battery charger which automatically shuts off once its full charge is achieved will greatly reduce the chance of overcharging that can ruin the battery as well as the gadget itself. It will also lessen the chance of causing overheating that may lead to fire and other threats to safety like burns once the gadget is handled.  The electronic gadget/cell phone charger will contain a sensor chip that will detect the level of charge of the battery. Most of the latest cellphones/'gadgets' chargers these days have a pilot light that turns into green once the full charge is achieved. Maybe a tiny chip can be embedded together with it that will automatically shut off the charger once the fully charged status is reached.
WATER HOSE with HOLES and SPECIAL CONNECTOR FOR VERTICAL GARDENS With the climate change and consciousness on environmental issues, there is a  trend towards the "greening" of the urban centers. This led to the popularity of vertical gardens. These gardens are sights to behold especially when they are lush. At least for those installed in our metropolis' major thoroughfares, I cannot help but think that those who designed them did not realize how these gardens can be sustained.  Most of them where placed in areas where they won't be viable and maintaining them can pose a challenge. And most of the time, even just watering them can aggravate the traffic conditions in the area.   By installing a regular sized water hose with tiny holes running through the different layers of the vertical garden can help in the viability of the plants. The hose should be connected to a water supply which can be turned on and off in a scheduled time.   By having a steady water supply to these vertical gardens, the viability of the plants in this type of gardens will be ensured. Watering them will be an easy task performed by less people, reducing manpower costs as well. It will also avoid the traffic caused along major thoroughfares when they use the water trucks in maintaining these vertical gardens. The water hose with tiny holes will be installed in a horizontal fashion in the different levels of the vertical garden. The water hose designed with a special adaptor will be connected to a water supply. The water supply maybe tapped from an existing water plumbing/pipe system in the area. This can be controlled remotely by a knob wherein the "gardener" can make his rounds at scheduled time to turn on and off the control. This will ensure that the plants will be watered adequately and therefore be maintained beautifully.
COLOR CODED MEDICAL RECORDS in a MULTISPECIALTY CLINIC  Having a centralized record system in a multispecialty clinic always poses problem, particularly when a certain patient sees two or more doctors in the clinic. Charts all in white paper may go as few inches thick and it is always difficult for a specific specialist to look for his/her latest notes on the patient's recent check up. Most of the time, when one patient intends to see two different doctors at the same time, the patient chart is lined up to two different specialties. One of the specialists will get a new blank chart and will have to ask where the previous notes are. Although the records are all kept in one envelop per patient, the loose papers per consultation are only stapled together and chances of losing even a page are greater. This will mean that the specialist won't be able to retrieve his/her past notes on the findings and medications given especially if the patient cannot remember. This system wherein charts are often misplaced actually defeats the whole idea why there are records in the first place! Color-coded medical charts are proposed for the ease of identifying the specific specialty in which the patient seeks consult with.  Assigning a particular color of chart per specialty will make it easier for the particular specialist to identify his/her chart. In this way, other specialists will only write something in their own assigned colored chart. Assigning a color for the chart per specific specialty will make the chart orderly showing the chronology of check ups made in a particular specialty. Progress notes will make more sense and even if a patient sees different specialists on the same time that he/she is visiting the clinic, the specific colored chart goes to the assigned specialty. Therefore, even if the chart is inches thick, the specialist can easily identify which one is his/her specialty and can see the series of check ups made on the patient. Different colors are assigned for the charts per specialty. Specialists are instructed only to write their notes in their colored assigned charts. This will make the record keeping more orderly. Charts are not lost and at the end of the check up, the different color-coded charts are collated and placed all together in one envelope with the name of the specific patient.
24/7 ON CALL PERSONAL SHOPPER  When one is alone in the house that is located in a big village where the nearest convenient store is about six kilometers away in the middle of the night and he needs something like medicine for severe headache or he runs out of LPG that he needs for cooking early the following morning, he has no one to turn to. Or even a resident of a big condominium complex who does not want to go out to buy something that he needs, a personal shopper who can be called anytime of the day will save the day or night.

Personal shoppers are usually hired to do shopping for wardrobes but somebody has yet to be at the beck and call of somebody to purchase variety of items urgently needed. The personal shopper can be called by landline/cellphone or through online communication anytime of the day or night to buy stuffs   except illegal drugs, for the client. The personal shopper will charge additional 25% for service fees for the total amount of items bought for the client. There will be a minimum total amount to be bought for the service to be availed. The person in need to buy something who does not like to go out anymore can avail of the services offered by the personal shopper. Convenience is the premium benefit of the client.

Personal shopping services will be offered by at least two persons to cover for the daytime or nighttime shifts. They can give their contact numbers to residents of a village and/or condominium complex and they will be on call anytime of the day or night to buy items for the clients.  A minimum amount of 500 pesos is required to avail of the services and 25% of the total amount of items bought will be charged for the services rendered. If the total amount of the items bought is less than 500 pesos but they still want to avail of the services, the leftover change from the 500 pesos will be given to the personal shopper as payment for services but it should not less than 100 pesos

NU1: SALADDIN - Fresh Salad Greens from Farm to Doorstep

Leading a healthy lifestyle is a growing concern. A primary consideration is eating the right food and knowing how it was grown. Freshness on delivery is likewise a challenge. This is almost impossible to do in a busy supermarket or grocery. Weekend markets may offer a solution but may still be tedious and at times inconsistent.  The need therefore arises for a steady reliable supply of naturally grown food delivered fresh to ones' doorstep.

The solution is linking a natural farm and its products to consumers by means of an online ordering application. This ensures that the food is delivered fresh and the supply meets the demand. The farm can offer its available products at the appropriate harvest time and fill the orders according to demand. There is no wastage of supply as everything harvested has already been ordered. The food is harvested very early in the morning and delivered directly to consumers via pick-up points wherever convenient. Frequent ordering may eventually lead to a subscription service if so desired by the consumers. The key innovation here is improved access to products and connecting to a distinct customer segment. The wish of the health-conscious has been granted with SALADDIN.

NU2: FARMHIRAM - Farm Equipment Rental

Farming techniques in the rural areas are laborious and slow. Cleaning a field for weeds and tilling the soil may take days of labor. Small-scale farmers often do not have the modern equipment to do these tasks easier and faster. Lack of capital to invest in equipment prevents the ordinary farmer from realizing a more abundant harvest. The need to be fulfilled is bringing modern farming equipment and machinery within the reach of the ordinary farmer.

The solution is investing in small portable farm tractors and equipment that can be rented by farmers to make their processes more efficient. Foremost among the list is a tractor to till the soil (replacing the carabao), grass cutters, chain saws, portable rice mills and dryers. Equipment may be rented together with the operators to ensure proper care and maintenance. This should make our farmers more productive at a minimal cost to them. The innovation is improved access to technology resulting to improved productivity.

NU3: BIKE TANAY -Tanay Mountain Bike Tour and Rental

The town of Tanay in the province of Rizal is a mountain biker's haven. There are many challenging and scenic trails to enjoy.  However most of these trails are uncharted and one can easily get lost in the terrain. There are some guides and suggestions from people who have experienced the ride as well as a few big tour operators (none local to the area). Getting to the trails is likewise challenging if one comes all the way from Manila. Having the right equipment (bikes, helmets, vehicle carriers) and logistics (food, drinks) also matter in a successful ride. The need arises for a local accredited bike tour operator to service the area.

The inspiration here is a tour operator providing services for white-water rafting in Cagayan de Oro. I was there for a business trip and had very limited time on my hands. The tour operator was able to provide the experience for the time window that I had with minimal preparation on my part.

A bike tour operator can provide detailed information on trails (highlights, difficulty levels), equipment (the bike itself, helmets, service) and logistics. One can enjoy a charted route with minimal preparation. It is very convenient for people who want the biking experience but do not have the complete equipment available to them. This may appropriate for novice and beginning riders, local and international tourists, and yes people who do not even own a bike. Bookings can be coordinated thru an online platform. Rental bikes can be secured with GPS trackers. The tour operator also provides employment to locals in the community effectively motivating them to preserve and care for the natural environment. The result is an improved appreciation for the sport and the locality of Tanay.

NU4: HERBREF -Indoor Hydroponic Herb Garden using old refrigerators

Fresh herbs enhance the flavor of food. They also carry good nutritional value. It is best when herbs are freshly picked and mixed with food immediately. The problem is availability and supply. You can only get them from specialty groceries and the quality is often unsatisfactory. It would be nice to have your own herb garden in your kitchen supplying your everyday needs.
Old refrigerators can be bought cheap at junk shops. They can be customized into a growing cabinet with good insulating properties. They can be fitted with fans for temperature and humidity control. Growing lights can be installed with strip LED bulbs and controlled by automatic timers. Hydroponic growing systems can be fitted into a vertical stack to maximize space.

The growing units can be sold complete with accessories to customers. It comes with complete instructions and a starter supply of nutrient solution. The business can also earn from sale of nutrient solution and maintenance of growing boxes. This satisfies the need for fresh herbs and provides a recycling path for old refrigerator units. Target market would be middle to upper income households as well as gourmet restaurants that can accommodate space for the growing boxes.

NU5: AMOY PINOY – truly Filipino fragrances

The perfume and fragrance business is a multi-million dollar industry. Most of the technology, expertise and brands are based in Europe and the US. Our standards and preferences for scents are actually adopted from western standards. A fragrance company called Jo Malone recently set up shop in Makati and they introduced the idea of selling individual scents from natural sources in nature like citrus, grapefruit, sandalwood, freesia. One can purchase several scents and experiment on combining them to come up with a unique scent. The Jo Malone fragrances are very expensive and feature only fragrances from western sources.

We have a number of local fragrances that are very appealing. Take for example dama de noche, ilang-ilang, sampaguita and other wild flowers. There are also delightful fruity scents like dalandan and mango. Let's not include durian yet as the market may not be ready for it. There are natural scents from trees and leaves like Baguio pine, Mahogany, Citronella, Pandan, Pinipig, and Cinnamon etc. The idea here is to extract local scents from different locations in the Philippines and manufacture perfumes that express a truly local flavor. Filipinos may associate easily with these scents because they are most familiar with it. The scent scan be sold in small sizes to encourage customers to buy several and experiment on combining them. The business promotes our local produce and establishes a distinct Filipino identity. Truly AMOY PINOY!

NU6: HEALTHY COCKTAILS – Local Herb-infused alcoholic drinks

There's nothing like having a few drinks after a hard day. It relaxes and recharges the senses. Although this can be bad in excess there is a way to add good nutrients to the drinks and make them "healthier". The inspiration here is the classic drink called the Mojito. It's a very popular cocktail heavily infused with mint leaves.

There are local herbs with excellent antioxidant properties. Most notable are malunggay, oregano, lemongrass, and cucumber. These can be infused with local spirits like gin and rum to create drinks that can offer true nutritional value. These can be marketed as bottled drinks or promoted initially in a "healthy bar".

NU7: MATALINAW: Ophthalmic TeleHealth System

Bringing healthcare to far-flung areas is oftentimes challenging. There are around 1,800 eye specialists in the Philippines but most of them are in the urban areas because practicing the craft requires specialized equipment. The specialty is literally very "visual" in a sense because we can actually see what is wrong by seeing the numerous parts of the eye. This is an ideal specialty for telehealth – diagnosis can be based on good imaging.

Imaging systems have evolved and improved considerably. There are portable high definition cameras that can be operated by laymen with special training. These can image the different parts of the eye and provide good quality pictures for evaluation of a specialist. A team of laymen and nurses can be organized and equipped with basic screening cameras and they can be deployed to far-flung areas at regular intervals. The images and data can be sent online to a central station manned by eye specialists. Patients that need specialty care can then be identified and arranged to be seen by specialists. The group earns by providing surgical services while the screening can remain free. This is one way to increase the influx of patients to a practice. This also benefits the patients by making their screening visit free and being able to diagnose eye conditions earlier. A smarter way to deliver eye healthcare – Matalinaw!

NU8: 2nd OPINION: Online Ophthalmology Diagnostic Reading Center

Ophthalmology employs numerous diagnostic tests to identify eye diseases accurately. Subspecialists in the fields of glaucoma, retina and external disease best interpret most of these tests. There may not be local available experts in some parts of the country. There can also be a need for individually practicing ophthalmologists to get another opinion for their challenging and difficult cases.

This service can be offered online with images beamed to a central server. The server can be secured and integrity and confidentiality of the data preserved. Ophthalmologists can avail of the service by subscription or as per test. An initial reading can be provided as well as an over-read of previous tests. Bringing together recognized subspecialists is key to this endeavor. This is like bringing a radiologist reading room online. The online platform can significantly expand the reach of subspecialty services and benefit patients nationwide.

NU9: NEIGHBORHOOD NIGHT CLINICS: Medical and Dental services after office hours

Medical and Dental services are usually provided during regular office hours. The patients have to miss work or school to be able to avail of these services. There is also the growing trend towards practices being hospital-based or mall-based. The doctor practicing in his place of residence within the community is growing rare. This project intends to revive the home-based medical and dental practice.

Consultation will be done at a clinic in a residential area from 8PM-12MN. There will be numerous MD's practicing at defined schedules during the week. The logistics are the same as a regular clinic except that there will be added security systems as well as accepting cash or credit card payments exclusively. The clinic cannot honor HMO patients because there are no approval systems after office hours. This allows the doctors to charge premium payments for the services offered.

NU10: MIND YOUR GLAUCOMA: Glaucoma Reminder App

Glaucoma is a chronic disease that tends to be progressive if inadequately treated. The end result if not properly treated is permanent blindness. Most glaucoma patients require eyedrops that are instilled at regular intervals. There are also regular glaucoma tests and follow-up consultations. Compliance with all of these schedules is crucial for glaucoma patients to preserve their vision.

The Glaucoma reminder app is installed in the cellphone of patients and guardians. This activates the cellphone alarm to provide notifications for eyedrops or consults. The app can also be a source of data and information about glaucoma. A built-in forum or discussion board can provide an avenue for patient support. A 24-7 hotline can also be set-up to provide emergency services. This simple app can hopefully improve the compliance of glaucoma patients and thereby decrease the occurrence of glaucoma blindness worldwide.
