NU6 Idea by Jopet Pineda - Air Pollution indicator

Hi Prof. Jorge,
Below is my NU6 idea.
Smoke belching indicator
Smoke belching among vehicles has significantly contributed to the worsening air pollution in our country. Many smoke emission centers fake the results by simply putting their testing tool on the exhaust pipe and take a picture without really conducting the test which I personally witnessed. This is probably one of the causes why there are still many smoke belchers on the road. To address this problem, I suggest that all vehicles be installed with a smoke emission tool gadget that measures the amount of carbon monoxide coming out from the vehicles. It maybe put inside the exhaust and transmits the level of carbon monoxide to a small screen which can be put in the windshield for easier viewing by the driver and the authorities. The screen will light red if the carbon monoxide level exceeds the limit or when the gadget is not placed properly.  This way, authorities are alerted if the carbon monoxide level of the vehicle exceeds the limit or the gadget is malfunctioning. When the screen lights red, the authorities can apprehend the vehicle owners and encourage them to keep their vehicles in good running condition and to comply with the smoke emission standards. On the other hand, the screen will light green if the gadget is placed properly and the carbon monoxide emitted by the vehicle is within the limit or standard. This gadget can also discourage rogue traffic authorities from victimizing motorists by insisting that the apprehended vehicle exceeded the carbon monoxide limit even though they are within the limit. Most important of all, level of carbon monoxide in our streets will significantly decrease and air we breathe will be cleaner.
Thanks and regards. 3

NU6- ITEM #1: PROJECT 10
by: Roman M. Cruz
Focus Topic: NEW PROCESSES AT WORK

I was actually listening intently during the cascade of the company’s Quality Validation Measurement System for the year 2014. As a backgrounder, these measurements system are to be use in the stores annual quality audits to determine the standing of the store in the area of Food, Service and Cleanliness. The annual FSC AWARDS is the highlight of the company’s pursuit of quality excellence inline with the company’s mission of to spread the joy of family by serving great tasting food. It caught to our attention is the strict requirements of on Food safety to which a deviation on one of the critical requirements would mean a disqualification of the store to aim for the GoldStar Award. The strict requirement was actually aligned to the Food Safety Act of 2013, RA 10611.

During our brainstorming and game planning of our franchise group, an idea pop up in my mind on how to make a process to which the stores could have a very strict monitoring of these critical deviations and further eliminate the chances of occurring any of these deviations. By the way, as a guide, here are the critical deviations identified that are relevant in our operations.

1.     Potable water supply
2.     Absence of spoiled item
3.     Restriction and exclusion of sick personnel
4.     Absence of critical/major sanitary defect on Food
5.     Product within shelf life
6.     Meet standard temperature of cooked product
7.     Meet standard temperature of hot held product
8.     Meet standard temperature of cold/frozen product
9.     Effective pest control program
10. Good hand washing practices

The idea was named Project 10. It was coined after the 10 critical food safety deviations that the store must ensure to eliminate in the store. Among the 10 items, items 6-8 needs a lot of strict monitoring as these are very vulnerable to be missed out since these are dependent on the actual production and demand. The process of which how the Project 10 will be use is a checklist will be made listing all the products/ in process ingredients with their corresponding standard temperature and they will be checked on an hourly basis! The process is actually tedious, but that is the only way to ensure that these critical deviations will be zero out in the store day in and day out.

The idea was actually implemented, and improved thereafter which was adapted by the whole group of stores that I belong to. It was later named as Project Mosesupon its revisions, in which not only it served its purpose but also has guided managers in detecting what are substandard and what is not, sharpening further their skills in food safety and production process management.

Here is the sample part of the checklist.  4

Bamboo Parquet Flooring System - NU6-1 by Verman Reyes

Prof Jorge,

Submitting NU 6 assignment no. 1

Bamboo Parquet Flooring System

Parquet flooring materials were used as finishing material for flooring in homes and basketball gyms. But alternative flooring system like laminated and vinyl flooring materials have emerged as better substitute for house developers.

What pisses me off is that this alternative flooring materials are expensive. Though parquet flooring are made of wood and cutting trees are an issue to climate change. I would manufacture a sustainable way to produce parquet made of Bamboo waste like shavings and powder.

With Bamboo parquet flooring using bamboo waste, this could be cheaper than the traditional wood parquet flooring and more sustainable for home developers. Also, one thing to consider is that most parquet flooring are made from Narra wood and production is decreasing due to ban of cutting of Narra trees.  3.5

Nu Idea Entry #6 Surepark by Rocky Gabatin

SPENTREP - S09

"SurePark"

It's always a hassle to go to shopping malls and recreational areas because of the difficulty finding a parking space. This is especially true when there are big events or there are "SALE" banners all over the place. More often than not, people move about the parking lot hoping to locate a vacant spot or shoot someone who steals the space you've waited for.

This hassle may be no more! Using the technology for seat reservations in cinemas, the same can be implemented in big parking lots. The concept is to incorporate the parking card dispenser hooked to a computer where motorists can immediately vacant parking spaces and select the one they want to park into. Once selected, the vehicle can only be parked on that selected spot. This also minimize, if not eliminate, stealing of parking spaces that lead to roaring tempers and bullets ricocheting about.

Number of US high tech start ups on the decline

From Washington Post and Kauffman Foundation

This is a cause for worry in USA since starts ups and high tech start ups generate more jobs than any other sector.  From 50% of total industry in the 80s, this is down to only 35%

The number of US start ups is on the decline.  So we see a lot of VCs around town, and even sponsoring small caps companies for first round financing.  Why is this so?

Well, complacency. There are guys who would rather receive unemployment checks.  And maybe US is so successful that its people do not think they should be entrepreneurial.  Start ups are"endangered species in US.  (California has become hostile to start ups;  so much red tape when you start a business?)

Is innovation on the decline at USA?  Were the migrants the source of entrepreneurship and innovation in USA

Poor countries citizens are hungry and are success driven?

What to you think?

Switch over of credit card from swipe and sign to chip and PIN system

To end massive credit card fraud;  why is US so late in this change?

This uses smart card and PIN instead of the usual swipe and sign technology which is still being used in US and here in PHL

Nu Idea (NU 12) by Rocky Gabatin - Instacool Drink

Rocky Gabatin
SPENTREP - S09

"InstaCool Drinks"

There is no better way to quench your thirst than a cool drink. And yet, this is quite a challenge for someone who is hiking or trekking. Ice cubes can be bulky to carry on coolers. Buying cold drinks on a remote area can be very expensive. A Coke-in-can can cost up to PhP 100.00 up on the mountains! Frugal people are reluctant to buy. As they say, "kung ayaw mo, inumin mo 'yang isangdaan mo."

But there can be a practical and lightweight solution to this. Instant cold packs (or ice packs) are used in first aid kits and by sports trainers for emergency cold compress. This is comprised by refrigerant gel and other compounds in containers--all inside a plastic pack. The cold pack is activated when the containers are crushed so the compounds can mix with the refrigerant gel--generating cold temperatures down to 14 degrees Celsius.

This can be incorporated on bottled drinks--where bottles are designed to contain the ingredients of a cold pack (in a separate layer, of course). When you are ready to quench your thirst, all you have to do is twist the entire bottle enough to activate the cold pack. In a few seconds or minutes, you are ready to enjoy your cold drink!  4  (meron na yata nito sa abroad)

NU 12 by Rocky Gabatin solar power channel

obile phones are getting rather bigger, and there are tablets which are becoming alternatives for laptops. However, they also consume significant amount of power and drains battery very quickly. This has been the apparent sacrifice made by users in order to enjoy the benefits of these advanced gadgets.

While there are power banks available everywhere to extend the life of these gadgets, there is still one requirement to charge these things—an electrical outlet. One way to solve this is to develop a built in solar panel on cell phones and tablets. This may be useless and impractical on smaller phones, but it will work on larger phones and tablets. A decent panel that can power 3.7 volts is about 5x4 inches and about .5 inch thick, while there are phones and tablets ranging between 5 and 11 inches. This means that the solar panel can fit quite well. Although this may add to the phone’s or tablet’s thickness, it would be a decent compromise for longer battery life.

The idea is to link the panel to the battery of the phone or tablet, charging it effectively even while in use. The gadget can still be charged through a power outlet for faster charging. 3

NU 12 Idea Entry #4 by Rocky Gabatin

There is a current hype in transitions lens nowadays, also called as photochromic lens. Basically, these are eyeglasses that have clear lenses when in the dark or dimly-lit area and change into a pair of sunglasses when there is adequate lighting or when exposed to direct sunlight. Of course, this is not new if it used on typical eyeglasses. But what if it is applied on car wind shields? This practically solves the need for car tinting, and this is especially cool on luxury cars or sports cars; but more importantly, it protects drivers and passengers from harmful UV rays without compromising night-time visibility from normal car tints. 3

NU 12 Idea Entry Conduction sticker 2 by Rocky Gabatin

Despite the fact that the MMDA included the conduction sticker number as part of the Number Coding Scheme, this has only been implemented more strictly in less than 2 years. Along with this stricter implementation is the requirement to put the conduction sticker number as plate numbers for registered cars that are yet to receive the official vehicle plates.

The problem is there is no standard for this, so motorist go about their own style to abide by the rule. Some car dealers print out the conduction number on a paper and laminate the paper to "protect" it from disintegrating when exposed to weather conditions. However, this "protection" is not enough, as I have seen blurred out numbers from even slight drizzle. There are also some methods such as penning the number with a marker on the default, temporary plates of newly purchased vehicles. The problem with this is it is too small to be read.

The solution: All Land Transportation Offices should provide a standard temporary plate with the conduction sticker number of the vehicle upon its release to the respective dealers. Alternatively, LTO and MMDA can mandate car dealers to develop its own temporary plates following a standard format and material.

This will help law enforcers in enforcing the law. More importantly, this will also likely to tap businesses that can service this. Suppliers would be more than happy to bid to LTO or to car dealers--bolstering local micro-enterprises. 3.5  (raket ni VT, shooting mate ni Prez)

NU12 - 1: The Saving Mindset (Jen Ursua)

New Attitude / Paradigm
When we get a hold of money either from a windfall or simply from our regular monthly income, we tend to immediately think of ways to spend it rather than save it. This Spending Mindset has always been a problem and is even synonymous to Earning Money.
Early this year, some of the New Year's resolutions that are posted in social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter are promises of conscious budgeting and wishlists of items that one wants but may not need. And so I wonder, how many of these people are actually planning to set a budget to save and not to spend?
Most Filipinos know the different ways on how to save and reduce expenses. But many also feel that they are missing out on something by cutting back on spending. Advertisers in the Philippines have succeeded in convincing people that lives are more miserable or less fun by not purchasing certain products and services, hence, people always tend to save to spend for these.
I believe that while we're still at the first quarter of the year, we must cultivate a culture of saving thru a campaign on The Saving Mindset which focuses on saving to invest and not to spend. The best way to change one's mindset is by learning to take pride in actually saving money. Sure we can have a some guilty pleasures but generally, we need to make saving something that we almost want to boast about.
As I am part of the average income earners, I'd like to start influencing people around me to enjoy working hard and see work not just as a way to get money to spend but also to save money and the fun challenge of growing it. After all, we cannot work for our entire lifetime. And while our bodies are still able to absorb the stress and physical toll that comes from working 8 hours a day (sometimes more), we must think of saving and investing for our future.
A financially healthy employee is a productive employee. We must start our journey to financial wellness now! 3

Re: NU12 - 2: Booze Busters by Jenny Ursua

What pisses you off at the neighborhood? What do you suggest?

Have you ever encountered neighbors complaining on how drunk they were from last night's house party and how they wished to wake up in a house with not a mess in sight? I did.

And so I thought of a hangover hotline for party-goers and drunk friends and neighbors who would want to avoid the cleaning part in the "morning after".

The Booze Buster hangover hotline is attended by an operator who is backed up by a team of 3 that provide house cleaning services for houses or condominium units that went a bit overboard. One is in charge of buying Gatorade drinks and breakfast meals for the house's owner and guests while the other two will focus on cleaning the place--all the mess that was left.

The call must be done at least 4 hours before the expected time of arrival of Booze Busters to provide ample time for the team to prepare. Each Booze Buster team would have to quickly set up CCTV cameras in corners of the place to document the entire process and to avoid any mauling incident from surprised guests with hangover.

10th NU12 by Carlo SenicaTopic: The Filipino Dialect Translator Apps

10th NU12 Topic: The Filipino Dialect Translator
Summer is fast approaching!  It's the time where we go places, spend time with families & friends, explore & be one with nature, and see the beauty of our country. But one (1) dilemma I have is how to communicate with the people on those different places. I only knew three (3) Filipino dialects: Tagalog, Waray, & Ilocano. As for the Waray & Ilocano dialect I can say that I'm only 10-15% familiar and don't know how to speak but only understand some words.
Did you know that there are more than 175 languages being used here in the Philippines? Here are some popular Filipino dialects which you might know: Tagalog, Cebuano, Kapampangan, Tausug, Waray, Ilocano, Chavacano, Hiligaynon (Ilonggo), etc…
The idea is to create a mobile app that provides an accurate translation of these different dialects.
 Features of the app:
1.       Provides accurate translation
2.       Comes in a user-friendly interface. Example: drop-down option to choose and equate one dialect to another
3.       Showcase the tourist spots of that area and/or province that uses the chosen dialect
4.       Includes vicinity map
5.       Provides information and online reviews on where to eat, where to book hotels, and what are the famous "pasalubong" and its cost.  4

NU12 Topic: by Carlo Senica Solar Panel for manufacturing plants

9th NU12 Topic: Solar Panel for manufacturing plants
Any idea on what are the major sources of power being used by manufacturing plants? It's thru their generator set (GENSET) then coupled to/by Meralco (or other power distribution companies). Most of them use these two sources; one as their main source of power which is usually the GENSET (the cheaper amongst the two that uses bunker fuel oil), then being backed-up by Meralco (or other power distribution companies).
With the current worldwide situation, that Europe, USA, & other countries are on its economic downturn, Multinational companies seek outside the first world countries for cheaper production costs and sees Asia as their new haven. Competing countries in Asia (such as China, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, India, etc…) must satisfy these companies with best product quality in a lesser costs. With this opportunities, means more manufacturing plants will be installed that will equate to a high demand for power & fuel.
Currently our country doesn't have enough power plants to support the increasing demand for power. Thus prices of power are continuously increasing. Also, we import fuels that make us not competitive enough when the worldwide market for fuel spikes due to increasing demands from other countries.
The Idea is to impose the Big Manufacturing plants (or other small plants that can afford) to install and use solar panels as their main source of power (then GENSET and/or Meralco will be used as their back-up source). As we all know that Philippines is a tropical country, thus using & installing Solar panels will be a good investment that will generate great returns for their company in terms of costs reduction. <solar panels are expensive;  current laws by ERC does not favor this;  ERC is controlled by the utilities> 3.5

Urban renewal projects in major Philippine cities.

Rizal Philippines  |  February 12 2014

Urban renewal projects

Many cities, rent asunder by the rent control law are ugly and in bad state of disrepair.  Many landlords do not want to upgrade/renovate their buildings because their rents are frozen.  But many cities, if they want to move forward, increase revenues, increase the number of tourist arrivals, must have urban renewal as a project. (That is innovation right).  We can help sustain economic development and growth

How does it bring more business:

1.  Economic activity   construction, construction materials supply, transport, workers,  building permits, certificates of occupancy,  thus more jobs

2.  Investments

3.  Building and construction loans

4.  Tourism

More real estate taxes from new buildings

Q   How do you start this:

A.  By having a campaign to renew rebuild the city especially with the businessman

Q. What are the positive reenforcement/fiscal incentives:

     1.  Preferred lending rate for urban renewal from Govt banks

     2.  Tax holidays for new buildings or renovated buildings;

     3.  Lower tax rates for new building

What is Sun Gas?

U.S. Department of Energy Gets Ready For Massive

Sun-Gas

Radical new liquid gas 20-times more powerful than natural gas ... yet cuts greenhouse pollution by 20% ... with full potential to power the entire continent ...

This breakthrough fuel could reduce or even eliminate dangerous fracking in our backyards. Even better, it could make early investors extremely rich by the end of 2014!

"[This Technology] could replace all the petroleum

Engineering Professor,
University Of Minnesota
From Uncommon wisdom - Know more about Sun Gas

Could oil reach $250.00 per barrel?

What is Sun Gas:

The Birth of Sun-Gas ...

For the first time in the history of the world ... mankind has created a new type of gas.
... The lab of chemist Andrew Bocarsly at Princeton is deeply involved in intensifying research that transforms the energy from sunlight into liquid fuel by taking carbon dioxide, and fusing it with hydrogen so that they split from water.
... A new prototype developed by the team at the University of Colorado — Boulder converts sunshine and water directly into useable fuel.
... University of Minnesota researchers are using concentrated light energy equal to — get this — 3,000 suns, to find the most-efficient way to convert carbon dioxide and water into Sun-Gas.
Other scientists are working on different designs using different materials ... like the Sandia Lab team in New Mexico who estimates that they could make diesel or jet fuel for roughly 10 bucks per gallon.
If this isn't revolutionary and disruptive, I don't know what is ...
But perhaps the most-daring of all, and the leaders blazing the trail are the DOE's own scientists at the Northwest National Laboratory who developed their own technology to combine solar energy and water.
How does it work?
The system uses parabolic mirrors that capture the sun's thermal energy at high temperatures and transfer the heat into a chemical reactor.
With several heat exchangers that mix water, carbon-monoxide and hydrogen, the result is Sun-Gas ... capable of offsetting the need for much fossil fuel.
Unlike natural gas where you have to drill and dig and fracture the earth to get a decent amount, Sun-Gas is easy to make using just the power of the sun processed through a state-of-the-art mechanical system that uses just water ...
Yet produces gas that's 20-times cleaner and richer than original shale gas.
How does Sun-Gas compare to other green energy forms like solar and wind?
While other green energies create a healthy breathing atmosphere for us and our children, they've been a sheer failure for the most part.
In reality, you'll need thousands of solar panels to power up a tiny neighborhood, let alone New York City.
