NU6 by Jopet Pineda AGSB Clark - Translation Apps for schoolchildren

Hi Prof. Jorge,
Below is my NU6.
TRANSLATOR APP
Many Filipino parents nowadays encourage their children to use English as their primary language to help their children adopt easily when they enter school. However, this led to many children having difficulty understanding and speaking Filipino and their local dialects. These children face a great deal of challenge when they study the subject of Filipino and Araling Panlipunan which is also taught in Filipino. They encounter difficulty reading and understanding Filipino literary works and grammar. To help them understand Filipino better, it would greatly help if there is a phone, tablet and a pc application where students can take a picture of their lessons in Filipino from their textbooks and convert the picture into a Word document. Once converted into a Word document, the application can help the student translate each Filipino word to English so they can understand what they are reading. This can be done by highlighting the words then the application shows the English translation without opening another translator application to check the meaning of the words. This would help the students understand and familiarize themselves with Filipino words and how they are used faster. The application would need a Filipino language expert to come up with a complete list of Filipino words and phrases with their English equivalent unlike most translation apps which are very limited. If the reading material is already in electronic form, my suggested application would also do the same of enabling the student to translate the Filipino words/phrases. The application also has an option to translate English or Filipino words to local dialects so the users can easily communicate in local dialect especially when they go to different provinces in the country with different dialects. 4

Thanks and regards.

NU6 by Jopet Keyhole garden using plastic drum with windows

Hi Prof. Jorge,

Below is my NU6.

Plastic drum keyhole garden for urban houses

I was so inspired by the keyhole garden of my MBA classmate Dr Edu Tuazon in Concepcion Tarlac where vegetables and herbs were grown organically. According to Dr. Tuazon, the keyhole garden concept originated in Lesotho Africa where people were taught to plant vegetables for their daily food and to sell their extra harvests for their income. The keyhole garden is shaped like a key hole where there is a hole in the middle and surrounded by blocks to keep the soil intact. In the hole, they put their fruits and vegetables trimmings and scraps to be used as fertilizers.
My suggestion is to make use of a plastic drum to make a key hole garden. This way, households with very limited space can still grow their own vegetables organically. Also, people will no longer need to buy basic and nutritious vegetables for their everyday meals. We just need to cut the sides of the plastic drum and make 6inches by 4inches windows around the drum (See figure 2 below). Push the cut part inside to help the soil keep intact. Then we need to put a PVC pipe at least 6in in diameter and put many holes around it (See figure 1 below). Be sure that the size of the holes should be enough that files cannot go through. Put some soil on the bottom of the drum then put the PVC in the middle and fill the drum with soil. You can now plant vegetable seeds on the windows and on top. You can now also start putting vegetable and fruit trimmings and scraps in the PVC. Remember to keep putting enough water on the PVC for the scraps to decompose and become fertilizer. You can put a lid cover on the PVC to keep away the flies, If you cannot find a big plastic drum, you can use small plastic containers like the 5 gallons water containers and just use smaller PVC pipe. If you have plastic 1.5 liter soft drink bottles, you can cut and join them together to make a long tube in place of the PVC. In time, the seed will grow and you can harvest vegetables for your family’s consumption. I believe this method will surely help every Filipino family provide nutritious and healthy meal and can also be a source of income for their family. This is also very timely since the government is now enforcing waste segregation and this will surely optimize the fruit and vegetable scraps that we just throw away.

Thanks and regards.  4

NU6 idea by Jopeth Pineda - chlorine tablet for water purification

Hi Prof Jorge,
Below is my NU6 idea.

Chlorine Solution/Tablets
Having a clean drinking water is everyone’s concern. Water pollution has contributed to the deteriorating quality of our potable water supply that many people have resorted to buying purified or distilled water to avoid contaminated water. Supply of clean drinking water becomes a huge problem during times of calamities. Many families now a day’s buy purified water from the different water refilling stations even if they get water supply from well established water concessionaires like Maynilad, Manila Water Co. and other water companies. Cost of purified drinking water is around P25 to P50 per 5 gallons depending on the water refilling station. You can opt to buy from the water refilling stations or ask them to deliver to your home. A typical family usually consumes an average of four bottles of 5 gallons container per week costing from P400 to P800 month.
Boiling, distillation, purification and treating water with chlorine are the current means to come up with clean water. According to the website of Center for Disease Control and Prevention, contaminated water from different sources such as lakes and deep wells can make people sick. Germs can also contaminate water from established water companies as it travels through miles of piping to get to a community. To prevent this, water companies either use chlorine or monochloramine as water disinfectants to kill germs.
It would be very helpful to come to come up with a chlorine solution/tablet  for home use which can be mixed with house water (deep well or from water companies) to make it potable. The chlorine solution is the same thing used by water companies to treat water that is safe and effective. With the chlorine solution, people are protected from water borne organisms and can save significant amount of money from buying distilled or purified water. Also, the chlorine solution can also treat the water from water companies whose pipes are contaminated.  The consumers can also enjoy the convenience of the chlorine solution where they can prepare wherever they are anytime they need clean water. Also, consumers do not need to be inconvenienced with going to water refilling stores to buy purified water or you can avoid the hassle of the delivery people going inside your home when you have your purified water delivered. This chlorine solution/tablet for home use can be sold in sari-sari stores, minimarts, supermarkets, convenience stores etc for better access. If processed efficiently, the cost of the chlorine solution/tablet can be significantly lower than buying purified water and can provide substantial savings for the consumers. This chlorine solution/tablet would really help me and millions of Filipino have convenient  access to clean potable water at a lower cost. 3

Thanks and regards.

NU6 Idea by Jopet Pineda - Air Pollution indicator

Hi Prof. Jorge,
Below is my NU6 idea.
Smoke belching indicator
Smoke belching among vehicles has significantly contributed to the worsening air pollution in our country. Many smoke emission centers fake the results by simply putting their testing tool on the exhaust pipe and take a picture without really conducting the test which I personally witnessed. This is probably one of the causes why there are still many smoke belchers on the road. To address this problem, I suggest that all vehicles be installed with a smoke emission tool gadget that measures the amount of carbon monoxide coming out from the vehicles. It maybe put inside the exhaust and transmits the level of carbon monoxide to a small screen which can be put in the windshield for easier viewing by the driver and the authorities. The screen will light red if the carbon monoxide level exceeds the limit or when the gadget is not placed properly.  This way, authorities are alerted if the carbon monoxide level of the vehicle exceeds the limit or the gadget is malfunctioning. When the screen lights red, the authorities can apprehend the vehicle owners and encourage them to keep their vehicles in good running condition and to comply with the smoke emission standards. On the other hand, the screen will light green if the gadget is placed properly and the carbon monoxide emitted by the vehicle is within the limit or standard. This gadget can also discourage rogue traffic authorities from victimizing motorists by insisting that the apprehended vehicle exceeded the carbon monoxide limit even though they are within the limit. Most important of all, level of carbon monoxide in our streets will significantly decrease and air we breathe will be cleaner.
Thanks and regards. 3
