NU Idea Entry #3 - Solar panel chargers for smartphones

Mobile phones are getting rather bigger, and there are tablets which are becoming alternatives for laptops. However, they also consume significant amount of power and drains battery very quickly. This has been the apparent sacrifice made by users in order to enjoy the benefits of these advanced gadgets.

While there are power banks available everywhere to extend the life of these gadgets, there is still one requirement to charge these things—an electrical outlet. One way to solve this is to develop a built in solar panel on cell phones and tablets. This may be useless and impractical on smaller phones, but it will work on larger phones and tablets. A decent panel that can power 3.7 volts is about 5x4 inches and about .5 inch thick, while there are phones and tablets ranging between 5 and 11 inches. This means that the solar panel can fit quite well. Although this may add to the phone’s or tablet’s thickness, it would be a decent compromise for longer battery life.

The idea is to link the panel to the battery of the phone or tablet, charging it effectively even while in use. The gadget can still be charged through a power outlet for faster charging. <authorless>
