NU 6 - by Elizabeth Timbol AGSB Clark Entrep - Iron Sand from Lahar

NU6 Idea 1: IRON SAND

In June 1991, the world witnessed the onslaught of the 600-year dormant volcano in the Philippines that became a global headline for the months that followed: Mt. Pinatubo.    The areas surrounding the crater suffered tremendously with the lahar deposits that came ravaging during the rains causing floods and massive destruction to many properties, livelihood and even lives that perished.

Since then, Pampanga has acquired lots of sand and being an ingenious country, experts found some use with what nature has spewed out from its inner layer.  The sand was then was used to create so many new "lahar-based" products like hollowblocks, souvenir and novelty items, quality sands, et. al.

It was only recently that a new discovery was made.  From the same sand, we were able to invent "Iron Sand".   Since pure lahar sand has 10 – 15% iron , we will now extract the iron content and export it to China in which it will be converted to metal, since they are the only one in Asia who has the technology to manufacture/convert it.
.
Initial testings have been done and approved.  Hopefully in June 2014, exactly 23 years after the infamous Mt. Pinatubo eruption, transactions will materialize.
