NU 6 by Elizabeth Timbol - AGSB Clark Entrepreneurship - Alternative Organic Fertilizer

NU6 Idea 2: ALTERNATIVE ORGANIC FERTILIZERS
Fertilizer cost, with commercial inorganic fertilizers, comprises about 30% of the total production cost in rice and other major crops in the Philippines. But the present technology of inorganic commercial agricultural fertilizer is grossly inefficient, expensive and damaging to the environment.
The allegations are not without basis. Urea, agriculture's main source of Nitrogen, is only about 30% efficient as it is vulnerable to ammonia volatilization & greenhouse emission once exposed to air and moisture, a precursor to global warming, and nitrate leaching which is responsible for the eradication of beneficial living organism in the water ecosystem of agricultural communities.
Plant utilization of Phosphorous in Phosphate fertilizers, like 18-46-0, 16-20-0 & 14-14-14 is only about 30%. Once applied into the soil, 70% is immediately tied up in the soil as insoluble phosphorous. The soil is thus inundated yearly with massive insoluble phosphate fertilizers which the plants can't absorb and causing massive soil chemical imbalance and intensified heavy metals concentrations.
Water ecosystem in the countryside are now without fishes and other beneficial organism due to the unhampered leaching of nitrate in the river with the use of Urea as the nitrogen source.
In recent years farmers have been observed to reduce fertilizer usage by 30% due to their prohibitive cost thereby pulling down the national yield average per hectare in the Philippines.  Environmental groups and various government agencies are now in fervent search for a more efficient, cheaper and environment friendly alternative technology hence many are now going into organic farming.
The solution: organic acids (generic, patent pending), belonging to the carboxylic polymer family, acting as nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer efficiency enhancers that inhibit nitrification and thus NO3- leaching and N2 gas volatilization and phosphorus fixation which intensifies N and P solubility and availability within the growth period of most crops.
The best benefit is it increases plant utilization of Nitrogen & Phosphorous from 30% to as high as 80% by inhibiting Nitrogen losses through ammonia volatilization and nitrate leaching, and preventing Phosphorous locked up in the soil. The chemical presence of Urea and Phosphate are stabilized in the soil retaining their availability for plant uptake for the entire cropping season.   It is not a farfetched possibility that all fertilizers may be coated with organic acids in the near future.

NU 6 - by Elizabeth Timbol AGSB Clark Entrep - Iron Sand from Lahar

NU6 Idea 1: IRON SAND

In June 1991, the world witnessed the onslaught of the 600-year dormant volcano in the Philippines that became a global headline for the months that followed: Mt. Pinatubo.    The areas surrounding the crater suffered tremendously with the lahar deposits that came ravaging during the rains causing floods and massive destruction to many properties, livelihood and even lives that perished.

Since then, Pampanga has acquired lots of sand and being an ingenious country, experts found some use with what nature has spewed out from its inner layer.  The sand was then was used to create so many new "lahar-based" products like hollowblocks, souvenir and novelty items, quality sands, et. al.

It was only recently that a new discovery was made.  From the same sand, we were able to invent "Iron Sand".   Since pure lahar sand has 10 – 15% iron , we will now extract the iron content and export it to China in which it will be converted to metal, since they are the only one in Asia who has the technology to manufacture/convert it.
.
Initial testings have been done and approved.  Hopefully in June 2014, exactly 23 years after the infamous Mt. Pinatubo eruption, transactions will materialize.

NU 6 by Elizabeth Timbol AGSB Clark Entrep - Organic Tocino

NU6 Idea 4: Organic Tocino
Tocino (Spanish for "bacon") is a Capampangan specialty widely known in the country and is now being exported in the West to as far as the Middle East.   In the Philippines, it is typically made from pork belly, sliced into thin strips.  Anise wine, annatto, water, salt, sugar, and salt are combined in a container. Each strip is then sprinkled with the mixture and stacked in a separate container, which is covered and kept refrigerated for about three days to cure.
The idea here is to keep the traditional preparation but using organic ingredients, including "happy pigs", all grown and raised in strictly organic nurseries, gardens and farms.  As the conventional tocino has been criticized for its use of refined sugar and preservatives, however minimal, the Organic Tocino shall use organic sweetener and will only be initially on limited production for sale in the mornings and only to be cooked immediately within the day.  4
This may be pricey than the regular tocino but it is intended only for a niche market.

NU 6 by Elizabeth Timbol - AGSB Clark New Calorie Counter Apps

NU6 Idea 6: The "Calorfie" App
In recent years, there has been a resurgence of living a healthy lifestyle that revolves around diet an exercise.   For most people on a weight loss or maintenance program, many approaches both scientific and alternative/holistic have been developed and have proven their effectiveness all in the same objective of preserving one's well-being.
This mobile app I have in mind is inspired by countless others which is useful for calorie counting.   While most methods require manual entry of the food item, the serving or weight/ volume measurements and the numbers that go with it, I would just like to develop an app wherein you take the photo of the food item from all sides and the calories are already computed instantly!  You don't even have to key in what dish it is as the app will instantly recognize or detect the dish itself down to its individual ingredients and its calorie content per ingredient, broken down from its total calorie content for that particular serving.
This may seem far-fetched but given the pace of technology available, this may just be on hand in the near future.  4

NU 6 by Liza Timbol AGSB Clark Entrep - Homtel

NU6 Idea 5: HomTel
A few years ago, we started with the concept of a modern budget hotel in Angeles City (ClarkStar Hotel).   Then we went to establish an affordable hotel, which was a notch higher that a budget hotel (Hotel EuroAsia).  Now we would like to conceptualize a place, literally a home away from home: a 'homtel'.   So much so that when you stay there, you feel right at home.
A place you to feel relaxed where a personal maid will attend to your needs exclusively, instead of random room attendants.   The food served will be home-cooked.  The facilities will be like what you see in a modern, upscale house.   You will have a spacious garden where hotels in the city right now don't have the luxury of allocating, as they are usually high-rise buildings, to maximize their income.
Homtel will just be more catered to the needs of the laidback tourist on R & R and an wiser option for the businessmen on the go who could use a breather from the demands of corporate life, home away from home.
