Slideshow: 20 worst states for roads
Twenty of the "worst-performing state highway systems" in the U.S. have been named by the Reason Foundation in its annual study that measures each state's highway conditions and expenditures. Alaska was the worst-performing system in overall efficiency and performance, followed by Rhode Island and Hawaii. North Dakota was the best. "A focus on early maintenance," can help improve the states' highways, said David Hartgen, emeritus transportation professor at UNC Charlotte in North Carolina and author of the report. A tale of 2 multimillion-dollar observation wheels in Las Vegas
There are two observation wheels under construction in Las Vegas, a 500-foot, $300 million SkyVue project being developed by Howard Bulloch, and the $550 million Linq, a 550-foot wheel being developed by Caesars Entertainment. Work on the Linq is advancing, with its wheel taking shape and retail and dining tenants booked, while work has been stalled on the SkyVue project -- with its "history of rocky financing" -- since September 2012. SkyVue project officials say work will continue, but some wonder whether the city needs two Ferris wheels. VegasInc.com (Las Vegas) (7/3)

The construction sector added 13,000 jobs in June -- the most in three months, according to today's report from the Labor Department. The total number of nonfarm jobs added in June was 195,000, and May's number was revised up to 195,000 from 175,000. The June unemployment rate was 7.6%, unchanged from a month earlier. However, CNBC reports that if discouraged job seekers and the underemployed were added to the unemployment number, it would rise to 14.3%. Why smart bosses give workers a stake in their company
Shift Communications co-founder Todd Defren chose to restructure his company using an employee stock ownership plan -- essentially giving part of the company to his workers. That rewarded the people who helped build the firm while renewing their loyalty and commitment. "In an agency environment, it tends to be, 'What else can you do for us?' Now it's more, 'What else can we do for the business?' " Defren says. Fast Company online (7/1)

House proposal could remove guest-worker cap on construction industry
The immigration bill passed by the Senate limits the number of guest workers in construction and other sectors to 15,000 a year. However, that cap could be removed when the House of Representatives takes up the immigration issue. "We're cautiously optimistic that there won't be any carve-outs in it," said James Young, a congressional relations director for the Associated General Contractors of America. Labor groups support a cap on guest workers. Engineering News-Record (7/8)
